Alrighty, here it goes again. I'm trying to learn some of the in's and outs of the modification lingo. I understand very little about tire sizes, all I really get is that 32's are bigger than 31's and that 285's are bigger than 275's. Whatever that's not good enough for me. Any idiot can pick out the bigger number must be bigger :pat: . But here is what I would like explained. What does each number mean seperately, like 275/70/16 what does each one of those numbers tell you when you break it apart? And what are the deminsions of 31's and 32's in the above from? That way I can make some kind of corrolation b/w the two when I see them here on the forum. Thanks, your local(not really, most of you guys live on the opp. cost from me) new guy.

 

I am by no means an expect on this so anyone feel free to correct me if needed.

285=width of tire in mm's
75=height of tire from outside of wheel in mm's
R16=diameter of wheel

Now the fun part, tires for 16" wheels and above are measured in mm's tires for 15" wheels are measure in inches.

A 285/75/R16 is the equivalent of a 33" tire

Stump, don't feel bad. I have no idea either. I learned 100% more than I knew just reading this post. When I went to get tires, I just copied the letters off of the tire and told the guy that this is what I want. Now I know what to ask for the next time I need some. Can't wait to get some and make it sound like I know what I am talking about! :fireman:

You can enter several tire sizes and it will show the change from the first entered.

As mentioned the Tire Rack site also explains the markings and what they mean. The second number is actually that aspect ratio in comparison with the first number often simplified in laymans terms to % width to height, but is not actually %.

Bear in mind though, that these sizes are not exact, and two tires from two different manufacturers, although marked to be identical in size, often will not be identical. The only time this causes a REAL problem is with AWD (as opposed to 4WD) vehicles which most usually recommend no more than 1/2 difference between all tires in CIRCUMFERENCE.
