My tires arrive tomorrow ( ) With new wheels and new tires has anyone tried to install the pressure sensors on aftermarket alloys? (specifically AR Mojave)

On the flip side, if I just go with reg rubber stems is the light going to be on all the time (pretty sure it will). I'm sure it's not hard to dissable, just unplug the control unit. I kind of think the system might come in handy at some point in the future and would like to avoid trashing it for no good reason.

 

I know the system senses all 4 tire pressures and the spare. If I do have the spare on it will be aired down, tripping the light. However if I don't put the pressure sensor on the spare maybe it'll be ok. [i think it's kind of handy to have. oh, did say that before ]

 

There's a few users on t4r that removed the sensors and placed them on their aftermarket wheel (I'm guessing alum wheels btw). I believe they did it to all 5 wheels cuz if you miss the spare, the light will stay on.

Btw, another option is to kill the light in the dash that lights the light for the tps.

 

I'm fairly positive no one on t4r reads back into the thread. Every other post was people asking the same questions that was answered 2 post prior. wow. Anyway. I'll update this thread with my experience. Current thinking, after doing some exciting reading on t4r: it seems this whole system might be more trouble than it's worth. I might just not bother with installing the sensors on the new wheels, then work out a way to fool the system if it should be tripped.

 

according to the "technical" service manager they found for my at my local stealership, "The system cannot be reprogrammed to look for 4 sensors [instead of 5]" and "if all the tires are low at the same pressure it will still trip the warning light."

 

When i put new wheels on mine i left the sensors in my old wheels with tires still on them. With them sitting out in my shed, the light never came on until i was about 80 miles away from them. Weird huh? Then i had to remove a wheel from the stock tire due to a blowout and the light was always on.

So i pulled the guage cluster to figure something out. I didnt want to open the entire cluster to pull the bulb so i was able to separate the face of the guages just enough to slide a little piece of electrical tape over that particlar warning light. Now I never have to look at that damn light anymore, even tho i know it is always on. Everything i read about pulling fuses or unhooking the control box said the light will stay on, this was the easiest way i could come up with.

I'm confused. But anyway. I decided for now to leave the stems off my new wheels. Before I sell the stock stuff, I plan to deflate and remove the sensor stems and sell them seperately. Should be easy to do, all I'll need is a compressor to reinflate. (oh, and the buyer will need to rebalence them, but hey, they should anyway.)

 

go to discount tire they can easily swap the sensors. its no big deal, www.tires.com to find one near you.

 

The sensors will work on many aftermarket rims. If you don't put them in (like I didn't do) the light will blink all the time. So have someone good try and reinstall them, replacements are $600.

 

The problem is I'm running 33"s and am going to fit the spare in the stock spot in order to do that I will have to air it down to 10-14psi to fit it in. If I mount a sensor to it it will constantly read as low pressure warning. And there is no way to re-register the ECU to only 4 sensors, according to Toyota.

 

We have swapped the Tundra monitors out with the 4runner because they are at a different angle. Just an option.
