My 93 22re has 235 000km about 150000 - 160000 miles on it and apparently it only has about 20 000 on a new chain, the guy who owned it before said he had it replaced i dont know if he had just the chain or the whole package replaced, he is kind of a skeety guy. However for the past little while when i was driving at the right rpm the motor made the clacking sound that the chain hitting the guides makes. Now when the truck is warm and idling it makes a very gross sound up around the timing chain cover, it sounds like a diesel engine now, possibly timing chain hitting cover? It is my guess that a new correctly installed chain shouldnt do this. what would cause it to do this and how can i fix it?

 

Oil Pump bolts in the wrong holes binding up the tensioner causing chain slap or has already broken the guides! Long bolt in bottom and short one in top!

 

could be a few things... sounding like a diesel might als obe valave adjustment..... if he is shady, he probably just replaced the timing chain, and didnt bother to do the guides or anything else...... heck, he probably waited until the chain broke, then jsut replaced the chain only......

 

is your timing chain supposed to hit the guides? if so would just replacing the guides fix my problem and how hard is it to replace them? do you have to take the timing chain cover off? Also the motor still runs pretty good, its been going steady for 4 or 5 months now and i get about 23 -24 mpg so nothing is terribly wrong i dont think.

 

if it eats through a guide it can hit the water jacket and cuase the block to basically become garbage.....

the timing cover needs to come off to replace the guides..... if i were doing it, i would jsut replace everything for piece of mind at least... check out www.engnbldr.com he has a full kit thats only like $70 its an upgraded design.... not as good as the full lce or doa steel guides in my opinion but a lot better than both platic toyota oem design

 

from what i understand i need the whole timing chain system redone and soonest, correct me if I'm wrong. I would like the do this myself but i dont have the time nor the patience to do it myself so i am going to get my trusty toyota mechanic friend to do it. I'm not sure if I want to do that or put in a relatively new rebuily 22re that i know the history of and has far less miles in the first place. Replacing the timing chain is a fairly labour intensive project, and the timing cover may be well on its way out by now, and with the abuse that i know this motor has taken i might just be better off spending a weekend swapping a motor.

 

timing chain can be changed in a good day if you have all the parts. If you do the engine swap I reccomend www.orientengine.com check them out!

 

keep in mind that the remanufactured engines might not pass Federal, or CA smog requirements (i see off the link posted above that their engines are supposed to be fine, but some don't).. Also, if you do a swap you have to have it checked out by a referee afterwards.. i know you are in Canada, and I don't know the laws there, but something to think about......

 

I've been thinking about it for the day and i think i will just do the timing chain on the motor i have because of time and money constraints, and there really isnt anything wrong with the motor i guess. this is something that is really going to piss you guys off, especially guys from california, we have no smog tests here what so ever, at least in my province. I'm not sure but i dont think it is law for my truck to even have a cat because it is over 10yrs old. Once you get your vehicle passes the rather lax inspection when you first liscense it, you can do practically whatever you want to it.
