What engine are you working on?
If you are working on the '88 4Runner, you posted in the wrong forum.
Edit: I see the 3.4 in you sig line. Too much speed reading.

Anywho, the 3vze 3.0 and the 5vze 3.4 are both non-interference engines so you can rotate the cams with no problem....go clockwise and align it to the TDC mark.

Ah, 3.4....
When the cams are at TDC marks and the crank is at TDC you are good to go so says the FSM and experience.
A excellent how-to from a member here:

I found the thread where Philtog had the same question:

Post #24 gives the TB procedure. Page EM-19, step 6 is what you are inquiring about:
http://www.ultimateyota.com/index.ph...&topic=7462.15
Then EM-21, step 10 is the check after the belt is on.

just turn the cam clockwise back around to it's timing mark again, no harm done. I had the same thing happen during my timing belt job a few weeks ago. I think spring tension makes the cam pulleys prone jump off the mark if moved slightly. As long as all 3 pulleys are back on their timing marks when the belt goes on, you are ok.

I bet you broke a tooth off the crank timing pulley. Read my thread:
