Thanks...it probably is that easy, I've just never torn into one. 35mm nut equates to needing 35mm socket or is that the spindle size? Either way, need to add something to the tool box.

Does Autozone sell a full rebuild kit....boots, grease, boot clips, and snap rings?
Changing the CV Boots on a ADD Equipped Tacoma

Do yourself a favor and buy the OEM boot kit.

I've tried the OEM and the Downey boot kit. The downey didn't last as long as the oem kit. plus installing the downey clips was a PITA.

go for the oem boot kit. and don't forget that the yellow grease is for the inboard joint while the black grease is for the outboard joint.

you'll need to go to the dealer to get the oem boot.. if it was the inboard boots that were torn, then you can order just the inboard boots and inboard grease (1 pair). but if it was the outboard boots, then you'll need to get both inboard and outboard boots. 1 box each for each side containing1 inboard/1 outboard boots.

Yes - 35mm socket or 1 3/8 I think. I used the 1 3/8 socket. That thing is on at 175 ft lbs so you need an impact gun or someone to stomp on the brakes when you use a breaker bar. My impact gun did the trick pretty easily.

@175 ft-lb, I'll probably borrow the 4' breaker bar from work and lure someone into holding the brakes with promises of cold beer.

It does sound like the OEM stuff is better than some of the aftermarket parts with varied countries of manufacture....

http://toyotaworld.com/ -- Have you guys seen this site?? It takes a little bit of navigating to find the right part, but they're a dealer, have every part I've looked for so far and everything is marked down below MSRP. Check it out! (also, let me know if you've had bad experiences with them)

The A1 Cardone CV's are decent. Thats what you get from Rock Auto as well as Checker. Lifetime warranty, about 100 new. I've had one in for almost 2 years with a locked front diff and its held up fine.

So my OEM boot kit showed up yesterday and it has 4 packets of grease - two brown and two black. Which grease packs go in which boot? There was no literature included. Also, one boot is a molded rubber that I would expect in a bool and the other seems like a thin, harder, molded plastic. Is this normal?
