Ticky Motor

Ticky Motor
I have a '97 4Runner 3.4, V6, 5 speed. It has a ticky motor when it gets up to temperature, when I rev it over 3000 rpm. I can shut it off for about 5 minutes, at which time the motor is still up to temperature, when I start it back up the noise is gone until it gets hot again. Could this be from a plugged cat, as it would create back pressure and make and exhaust leak? I also think it has lost power. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey NSB, first off congrats on your first post second how many miles you have on the clock? My 2003 50k "old" (for lack of better word) engine has a slight tick to it but I think it's just part of owning a Toyota. Could you get a sound clip?

I acctualy put the 5-30 XL. Its not one of the 25k mile oils. its a 7500 mile extended drain oil. Its the cheapest of all the oils. I want to run it for about 10k and get a UOA. After this test i will prolly use 0-30 and run it for 25k.
If the test on the 5-30 comes back good i can keep running it, I want to see how it holds up.

Well hate to thread jack but i am going to be changing my oil when i get my supercharger installed and was thinking about AMSOIL anyways.
I change my oil every ~5000 miles no matter what the oil says anyways, just the way i am. so what oil would be the best oil/filter to use?

no offense but oil doesnt have anything to do with the tic.. imo.. maybe a much heavier oil to dampen the sound but in reality oil will not kill the tic. i would need some substantial proof bc i have tried every oil under the sun and notta. same ole yota tic

maybe your tick was different i dont know without listening but again i have tried to rid the tic but nothing and i have heard countless other 3.4's with the same tic and they have tried motor cleaners and oils also. notta..

Mine kinda did it all the time, sounded like it was comming from the topside somewhere. I never could narrow it down. I didnt like it tho

yeah i would make sure its not just the injectors as they are very loud one some motors, also check your valves as they will create tick as mentioned above if slightly out. If you wana pinpoint the problem get a mechanics stethescope, or just a long big screwdriver and put your ear to one end and put the blade against various portions of the motor until you narrow down the location of the tick.

it doesnt bother me. i am used to it but it does get magnified when you are in the Mcdonalds drive thru and the sound bounces off the brick wall. tick..tick..tick..tick..tick its very rythmic. now if that tick wasnt rythmic i would really be worried.
