Tapping sounds from engine, video, any ideas?

Ok, i have had a slight tapping sounds coming from the passanger side of my engine for some time now. It is not that loud and can only be heard from the pass side of the truck, it comes through the wheel well the loudest.

when i install my Supercharger i am going it pull my valve covers anyways to replace the seals since one of them is leaking just a little. So while i am in there and have everything apart i am thinking i might as well adjust the vlaves, Think this might be the problem?

Here is a video, yes it is of an MR2 and has a differnt engine but right around 0:50 seconds when he gets out and looks at the engine, that tapping sounds that you hear. mine sounds almost just like that, though not near as loud.

It is only on the passanger side of the engine and is only noticeable if you are outside on the passanger side. Any ideas.

My truck makes a similar sound only on the passenger side. I have not heard the video but I get what I call a "light knock" and it isn't even that hollow sounding. So maybe a "glorified tick?"

Yeah, that is a fairly good description. Maybe this is a normal sound?

I think it is a "Toyota" sound. I have heard 3.4s and 4.0 V6s with the same sound. Also, most V6s have an inherent miss somewhere while the engine is idling. Don't know if this is related.

baseball cards in the spokes? j/k

i've got a tick that's similar to that but it's on my driver's side. i think i have it traced to a little device on the brake booster that may or may not be the "VSV" from what i can tell from my manual and some fishing on yotatech. probably not the same as your sound, but i thought i'd chime in on being in the "toyota tick" club. nice MR2 btw!

That could be it, though i think it just speeds up if you rev it, but then the engine gets too loud so i can't tell if it is gone or i just can't hear it.

Well this is good to know, and here i thought it must be something going wrong in there. Would be great if it is a normal sound.

Mine does the same. 1996 4runner V6 4x4 auto. 185k. My transmission fluid was a little low so I added some and thought the sound went away but now it is back. I can crawl under it and hear it sounding like it is coming from inside something about where the engine, transmission, and drive axles meet. From inside sounds like it might be a shield or something, but under neath it definitely sounds internal.
I had a Subaru that would do similar but you could turn it off and back on again and it would be gone. "They" said it was the lifters on the Subaru's.

Other than the slight tick (that sounds EXACTLY like the MR2), it purrs out one smooth song, not like a bunch of cylinders banging away.
I thought the tick was in drive only at idle, but tonight it was in all gears including park. It seems to go away when I rev the engine. And I think the engine has to be at operating temperature before it starts. In other words, it does not do it at start up.
Do I need to take an ear of corn and shove it up someone's...well, do you think it is the ethanol in the gas?

Yeah, I am a Lucas Oil fan. The first place they started selling the stuff was where they sold tractor parts. Those old guys swore by it.
I hope you can help more than you hope you can help.
Thanks,

it sounds like the idler pulley on my earlier Toyotas .

78 Longbed pickup and 83 Tercel

I do not believe it is serious. I don't even know if our motors have idler pulleys.....I am no mechanic....

Had a similar problem a couple years ago, it started out sounding like that...then got much much worse.... this is whqat the problem was...

Not sayin this IS your problem...just make sure the output shaft does not wobble...I had vibration around 50mph and up, and could not figure out why till my t.c went thru the bell housing.

nice, that doesn't look good.

Though i doubt that is my problem.

The sound seems to be coming from the top end of the engine, not the back of it. At least i hope so.

Yep, already have one of those and used it too.

Though it didn't really help me trace the sound much. All i could tell was it was coming from th engine and was louder on the top and one side (forgot which, i think driver).

It would have to be real loud injector to be the sound but anything is possible i guess.

Mine is still coming and going. I want to hear more from Team420. Output shaft? You mean the thing that goes from the rear of the transmission to the rear wheels? Haven't checked, but what if it does wobble? Is there a repair or is it already too late?
