I have the '99 tails. It has the amber cap. Can't take it off. I got the all clear tails and painted the lower half Japan red...gotta look legal. I don't like the naked bulb look for the rear turn sig, so I used a Japan yellow bulb paint. It looks different and brighter than amber. I like it...matches my side markers too.

96-00 tails are ALL THE SAME. The new tails didn't come out until 2001. I added the 2001's to my 97 limited. The 2001 tails don't have the orange cap anymore, just an orange bulb. If you get those, it should work.

Look for my full write-up on my 4Runner page in the "Pics&Vids" section.

You can just bust out the orange cap in the 96-2000 with a screwdriver or something similar. I know lots of people who've done that.

In that pic I posted the 96-98 tails are on the left and the 99-01 on the right.

The new tails run about $95 each from www.toyotaparts4u.com

Yes, you can take out the orange cap.

The way I did it was put a cutting bit on my extension wand for the dremel and cut the orange thing into little pie slices (5 I think) and pulled them out of the hole. There was alot of shavings so I rinsed them out with water, drained it, and then hit it with a blow dryer.
I liked the result alot, it looks much cleaner without the orange.

One warning, you will chew up the hole a little, but the bulb still locks in, and you cant see it so......

I tried using a screw driver and busting it out, but stopped, too much risk of serious damage.

I'll eventually get 99+ tails, but this is good mod for now, it was free.
