Tacoma and 4Runner Third Member Questions

Question 1: For all of you that have swapped third members out of your vehicles for other ones, did you perform any preventative maintenance/technical inspection of the units before install? Since the third member is already out of the vehicle I am wondering if I should be performing any checks.

Question 2: I am under the impression that all auto trans V6 E-Locker equipped Tacomas came with a 4.10 ratio. I am also under the impression that all auto trans V6 E-Locker equipped 4Runners came with a 4.30 ratio. If these are the same exact drivetrains why did Toyota put slightly lower gearing in the 4Runners?

Thanks all!

1. No. Other than a good visual inspection and thorough cleaning. Should you get all technical with it? Grab an FSM and have at it. If you think you need to...

2. 96 auto trans V6 E-Locker equipped Tacomas with the Off-Road Package had 4.10s, and 96 auto trans V6 E-Locker equipped 4Runners with the Sport Package had 4.30s(don't know off-hand about all years). Why? Why not?

My E-locker came from a Tacoma, not sure the year, but it had 4.30's

If you are buying an E-locker, which I'm assuming you are or have done, Get it bench tested or have the seller prove it works.
