Switch for trunk 12V aux power
Alright I'm not very good when it comes to modding electrical components so I'm goin to throw this one out here and see if anyone can come up with something. I want to have the 12V auxiliary power point in the trunk on a switch so I can control when i can provide electrical power to it even when the car is on. The reason being is because I have a Whelen slimlighter and want to mount it in the trunk since it is very nice and plugs into the auxiliary power point but I have no way of turning it on from the front (since I obviously cant reach it). Anyone have an idea of how i could wire and attach a switch by the steering wheel so I can leave the slimlighter switch in the on position and when I want it on I just turn on the electrical power to the auxiliary port in the trunk and therefore allowing the slimlighter to go on?

I actually did this a couple months ago. I ran a fused wire from the 12V + on the battery to a switch in my dash, then, from the other side of the switch, you run a long wire under the carpet and along the bottom of the doors and behind the rear panel. (It's much like running a power wire for an amp from behind the dash to the trunk area) Then cut the positive wire to the cig lighter and splice in your new 12V wire (I used a butt connector). Easy peezy.
I don't know how much current your slimlighter draws, but you may want to put a relay into that circuit. Do a search on how to wire up fog lights...it's the same thing, but instead of hooking up the fog light, you run that wire all the way back and hook it up to the positive of the cig outlet.

I just wired the 22re idle up vsv, made it into a manual engine idle up option. I junk yarded a hazard switch and wired to that: I used power from the radio and the lights wire, so the switch lights up at night. The benefit of using a toyota switch is that it'll fit into the dash well. That's my thoughts.

With the wire diagram of the 2000 4Runner it would be simple to find the wire that feeds the rear power socket . This will also allow you to see if it is controled by the ignition switch or is always powered
Then splice a switch in some place easy for you to reach. If your lucky you can just unplug and replug things no need to solder and heat Shrink.
The switch would have to be rated at your highest load . Then you will be good to go
