Ya it could be something to do with the clutch. It could be clutch fork or clutch plate could be wore out or out of alignment.

Had the EXACT same issue around 80K after using fuel injector cleaner....Killed my allready old/aged spark plugs

I'm 110% sure its your older sparkplugs......
FINAL ANSWER?
YES
MY FINAL ANSWER!
To other who have had this issue solved..... its wasent carbon or fuel injector cleaner that solved this issue as soon as you decided to replace your aged spark plugs, that did the trick!
again it is your OEM plugs that are supposto be replaced every 30K!!!
Please trust me....
If you add seafoam or techron cleaner to these older plugs you will foul them badly and make the detnoation much worse.
AND YES THAT NOISE YOU HEAR IS 100% HORRIABLE for your engine and you need to replace the plugs right away....

good luck and god speed everyone!
over and out!
well I would say ya to your opinion on it being spark plugs but I have 2 month old denso plugs and ngk wires and a new cap and rotor so it is not them and everything is gapped correct

I have messed with timing and still get it from time to time, I have noticed since I have been using shell gas that it is far less I hear the pinging
who know maybe there is something to their claim that there gas cleans the valves or that they run 10% ethanol in there gas and that causes better ignition who knows but right the shell station is usually 1 to 5 cents cheaper than any of the other station here so I will keep using their gas.

i still hear a flutter/rattle too...

i just got the timing belt replaced, new spark plugs, new spark plug wiring, new fuel filter, fuel injection service, and i still hear the flutter/rattle when accelerating. my 4 runner is a 2000 and has 114,000 miles. i did recently (couple months ago) start using 87 octane gas, but i was only using 89 before that. it seems i have had service done that many folks here have suggested would fix the problem.... anyone have any ideas?? thanks!

Holy Crow!

This occurs during a load at LOW RPMs right?

I have all new junk, and it does this. Most of us call it "lugging the engine". This happens in every manual i've ever driven.

The 04 Taco did the same thing BRAND NEW OFF THE LOT. It isn't spark plugs.

You are simply loading the engine with fuel, and air by slamming on the gas, and your engine isn't powerful enough to overcome the resistance of your drivetrain in a higher gear. This happens to me all the time trying to go slow in L4 and not slam over rocks when wheeling. Wouldn't call it a problem.

By the description it sounds like valvetrain clatter, but that noise will be present when you rev the motor from idle.

Obviously, if changing the octane grade makes it stop then its likely to be something else... Curious can you "feel" it in low rpm acceleration? Or is it just noise?

Ok. Whenever i've had valve train chatter, it has mad the noise through the entire range of RPM's.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but a BRAND NEW VEHICLE with 11 MILES on the clock would THEORETICALLY be set with the proper clearances, and have everything top shape, and if it didn't, it wouldn't have been running for the last 3 years with zero problems, right?

Soooo, since the truck made this noise, THE DAY WE TOOK IT OFF THE LOT, in L4, testing out the new locker on a back road, trying to go REALLY REALLY SLOW, and then giving it enough gas to get over a rock, why is there something wrong with it?

This noise has been described as the dieseling noise.

If any of you who own a manual truck and wish to reproduce this noise, go out to your truck, put the truck on a fairly flat road or parking lot, put the truck in 4th gear, and try to start moving forward. It will make the noise for you.

I had this same experience with my truck when the water pump started leaking. I didn't know that the running water sound coming from behind the dash was a bad thing so I kept driving her for weeks until one day she started overheating badly. During this time period the "diesel" sound kept getting worse and worse at low RPMs under load. I had the timing belt and water pump done and the sound never came back. (But the mech didn't tighten my Crankshaft pulley bolt correctly and I had bigger problems after that )

I am having something similar. Mine happens in the morning when there is moisture on my truck. I'll start it up then start to drive off and it will chatter a little when i get on it a little. At first I thought it might be the cat was going out but since it has only been happening in the morning with moisture around. The chatter is only there in the morning when there is moisture. Is it possible that the clutch and plate get some water in there and it slips a little? I have an 04 Tacoma 4x4 2.7L manuel.

Like AxleIke I think it might be normal.
I have had this to some degree since I bought it used at 57k miles and still have it at 108K miles. Uphill, 4th gear, and heat brings it on. regular maintainence (Different oils (Mobil, castol, Amsoil), spark plugs, waterpump, and belts) changes nothing.

Well I noticed it in the afternoon when i was leaving for work so guess its not what i thought. My truck has 69,000 miles on it, but if others are having the same thing and been putting on a lot of miles to their truck with no problems then I guess I wont worry about it and just keep up with my regular oil changes and that. Other then just the chatter everything on my truck is in good working order besides some minor body damage from a friend and me not paying attention while off road .

If your worried that the pinging may be something other than normal detonation, you can test it by filling up with one tank of 93 octane. The pinging should diminish dramatically.

Some pinging is normal and means you engine is well designed. You can avoid it by downshifting or applying significantly more power.
