Make sure you get the poly bushing kit with the half moon bushing included. As you may have read in this thread, mine did not come with one, which is lame. The last thing I want to do is mess around with that thing again.

(200th post in this thread!)
On mine I could see the entire rack move side to side as I yanked on the tire.
If that is the case, the bushing kit should definately be the fix.

I got my bushings but have yet to put them in.

I did this a few weeks ago or so.

It was a total pain in the ass, but seemed tighten up the steering a little bit...

I have some testing to do this weekend.
BTW got this link to from Mojo Risin in another thread.

Not sure I have seen it in the previous 202 post, maybe it is useful.
Cheers

the trick to the bushings is to jack both wheels off the ground so you can pulled the rack back are enough to work on the front side of the rack. with the wheels off the ground they can both turn outward allowing the rack to be pulled back. I missed this tidbit when I did mine the first time and it was a major PITA and I ripped one, a bushing not a gassey! the second time I jacked up the wheels and it took less than 1/2 hour to do it and it was easy.

*sigh*
Just an FYI. The $700 price tag that the dealer qouted you is more than likely for a remanned rack. Also, the reman may be coming from the same distributor that you purchased yours at.

The online store I purchased mine from does the majority of there business selling to dealers across the country. They have several different online names but still recieve there racks from only 2 or 3 distributors (so I've been told).

It's pretty hard to find a brand new rack for our rigs. If anyone knows where to find one for a decent price PLEASE let me know.

Wait, are you telling us you're still having problems, even with the reman. rack?

I'm not. However after I had it aligned I've been getting a clunking sound from the drivers side. I've checked multiple times but I don't think its coming from the rack.
I have zero leaks and the alignment guys say the rack is solid.
I do however think that it may be worn bushings or a bad balljoint. I only hear it when weight is transfered to the front from hard breaking or sudden stops and it doesn't always happen.
I've been offroad several times since and never hear any unusual sounds.

Hmmm...yeah, sounds like a balljoint to me. Glad to hear the rack is okay.

Anyone try tightening the nut just to the right of the inner tie rod? https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...30&postcount=1

This reduced my play on the left hand side of the rack. If you tighten too much your steering will be harder. I have no idea what the specs are...

I also did a bushing kit for the rack and swaybar. Not a bad job...

Glad to see somebody tried it. I guess I'll give it a shot this weekend.

Yeah, reply to this after you try it. I think I might give it a shot too. Something is still strange with my rack.

so what's everyones recommendation??? (my bushings are moving too)...do you guys recommend:

(A) just replacing the bushings with polyurethane ones

or

(B) replacing the entire steering rack (the $290 deal)

-B

I did the bushings and it helps take most of the play out for me.
If the rack has internal play, then you will still feel it a bit (not worth the $290 for me anyway).

I got the ES bushings and it took me about 2 hours to get it all installed. Required alot of muscle to get those things in there (it helped me to spray the bushings with a silicone lubricant or WD-40 before I pounded them in.....some went in easier than others).

I still have issues with something loose in my rack even after tightening #9. I get a knocking feeling in the wheel, but it's better then it was. If you push the boot aside on the left tie rod and the rack end moves, it will tighten up if you tighten #9. I also wander but I could need an alignment, to top it off I think one of my tires is going bad...

Well I may see if I can order this #8 part and try and replace it. Just rotating it will make the play be 180deg out of phase...

I tightened that nut today on my rack, it did seem to tighten up the steering quite a bit- I didn't ream on the nut, maybe got a 3/4 turn out of it. The steering wheel still turns easy enough, just feels a bit more solid. Most of the play I was getting was only on the drivers side. I could shift the driver's wheel a little to the left and right, and see the steering wheel move by the same amount. I think that part #8, which presses against the back smooth side of the rack may wear out a bit over time, so there is less friction/more play over time. Anywho, I'll report results in a couple of days, but I think this might be an easy fix, atleast for the short term.
