hehe. it took us 5 pages to come to that conclusion, haha.

anyway, hopefully I'll be able to flip for a rack when I buy my clutch and flywheel in the coming weeks so I can just pull that whole thing and get it out of the way.

Yeah, I had wheeling "incident" that trashed the ds outer TRE anyways, so thankfully it wasn't a total waste of time. I'm not looking forward to replacing the rack...

$83.50 for that set huh? Hmmm... I should just do it. I'm not getting it fixed by breaking Schuck's pieces...

(uh-oh... I'm finding it for cheaper! $72.12!)
Hey Mark , You're welcome to borrow it anytime .

Aaaa, it's no big deal. the hardest part is the hydraulics. you have salt on the roads in TN? I wouldn't think it would be much more difficult than mine.

Thanks DoubleD! I may just invite myself over and replace the TRE in your driveway, that way you don't have to be without the puller for the day. I'll drop you an email and we can try to sync up schedules again. I seem to have some extra time on my hands during the week these days.

keisur; David's not in TN, he's here in the Seattle area.

Hey David. That was the same problem I was having.
I didn't want to spend the money to replace the rack end only to find the problem was bigger so I saved a bit by replacing the rack.

I was at NAPA this morning and found a puller similar to Daryl's that works great for pulling our tie rod ends.
I tried it on my rig this morning and popped the bolt end right out. Forget those damn universal pullers.
I know...I know...how much does it cost? Well they wouldn't give me my discount because it was too cheap. Can we say $13.69. WTF? Ya $13.69.

When you used it, did you have it off angle at all?
If it does go in at even a slight angle you put alot of stress on the tool and lose leverage too.

Any update from you guys? I went wheeling on Saturday, and the play is getting pretty bad. Think I'll be ordering up a rack this week...

Well... my remanufactured rack has been on there for a few months now. Most of the play is gone and steering has tightened up a little with no leaks so far.
However, there's still a little play/dead spot in the middle.
I guess i'll get used to it. Unless i want to dish out aobut $700 for a new rack.
*sigh*

The bright side is, it only bothers me on highway drives.

I bought a used rack for ~120 bucks, hope to get it installed this weekend. I'm hoping it lasts for a while even though its used. I just didn't want to shell out ~250 bucks for a reman. one.

very informative thread. I seem to have some of the same issues. I will start with the bushings and seem if that cures it. If not then....
