Free mods, well not really any. Like I said above, you can make a CAI for about $20 or so. That's about all I can think of..
The problem is with Honda's is that they have no torque, so if you were to hack off your muffler, you will see a small gain in horsepower, but a small gain in high horsepower.

-advance ignition timing 2-4 degrees, should help the throttle response a bit
-cut the bottom of the airbox, well if you dont have an intake...
-gut the cat... be careful its illegal!
-valve adjustment, maybe even try a tighter valve lash..
-smooth out intake/exhaust manifold or maybe gasket match them..
-
after all that labor, you might gain 5hp max... you might wanna try swapping parts like using a large throttle body from the 1.8 integras, might help a bit also.. good luck

I am very familar with the D-series engines. Let me offer some advice:
Your best bet is to swap an engine in. Preferably a B-series and if you are crazy an H-series. I say this because you will end up spending the same amount of money trying to make the D16 fast - trust me.
I had a 95 Civic SI. Bone stock I ran a 16.8 @ 87 MPH. I put every mod into it I could find - and only the best. AEM CAI, Gude Cam/ECU, MSD ignition, Tanabe Exhaust, JG TB, 8mm wires, dumped about 120lbs, removed the AC and PS belts, lowered it the right way, Nitto drag radials, etc. I got it down to a 15.1 @ 92.9 MPH. But here is the kicker, I dropped about $3500 to do all that (and more little things that didn't work).
That is WELL over the price to drop in a B16 or B18C. Heck, you could do a B18B/B18C (Frankenstein swap) for that much.
So please, consider the swap route. If your D16 is decent, you could get about $400 for that on ebay.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Buy a 1st gen AWD DSM and run high 14s with "free" mods. (remove a few restrictions in the intake plus a plastic sleeve removed in the boost selonoid was good for 2 more psi of boost.
But then again a Honda has build quality and reliability on it's side;DSMs aren't for everyone.

looks like your free HP mod options are pretty limited. just cave in, trade in the civic (i had two), buy a 4runner and join the club. you'll be a much happier person and probably wont get as many speeding tickets too

I actually beat a couple GSR’s. I also beat a Type-R one time. I ran a 15.3 and he ran a 15.4. Not sure what happened to him, but he lost! I weighed my SI one time, and with me in it, it was 2300, and I weighed 185 back then. I could really get people off the line, but most forced induction cars or V8’s would catch me on the top end.
I had the rev limit set at 8200 on my MSD. You should have heard that thing when I ran an open header at the track. It sounded like a chainsaw on steroids.
Once you get to a certain N/A HP level, VTEC and dual cams don’t mean anything. In fact, a lot of the really fast all-motor guys run SOHC non-VTEC motors. It’s all in the head baby. That’s where I fell short. No headwork.

Still wouldn't mind having an AWD Eclipse/Talon tho. Excellent potential.
