Spotlight aimiing
Hi Guys
After fitting some wicked IPF 900 series spotlights between the main lights on my UK 4Runner I have been having some problems aiming them. Either they are too high or too low - does anyone know the "legal" height at which they ought to be set? ie: At what distance (200, 300m etc) should they "focused" and is that focus meant to be on the ground? Or are they meant to be parrallel with the road? I've got them stripped in on my light switch so that they are activated on high beam only so I can't really use the original lights as a guide.
I've also just fitted 2 Hella 550 fog lamps - now because I've got an ARB bullbar (drilled holes in the lower side of the bullbar as it angles up towards the indicators) they do not sit parrallel to the road. Any advice on where these should be focused?
Your comments/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I just set up my PIAA 580's and I simply placed my rig on a flat surface, and switched back and forth between the low beams and hi-beams, then I set my 580 Driving Lights to have their hot spot right on top of the hot spot of my high-beams. This may be wrong, but it works for me. Anybody? Anybody? Anybody? Jay? Gadget? Different states may have different rules, but since your aux lights are desinged for "off-road" only, it really doesn't matter about the law, unless you "accidently" have them running on the highway. In such a case, you best pray that they satisfy your state's requirements. Call the Highway Patrol or State Trooper office of your state, and they can tell you the legal limits etc.

Not sure if this will help, but...
to focus my Hella 500's, which were mounted on my bumper, I believe the directions said to 40 ft away from a wall, and adjust the light so that the top of the beam is basically 4 ft high off of the ground. (not sure if that is exactly correct with the numbers, but I think it is close)

I tried to make it to the last shindig but personal stuff stopped me. Anyway, I've put too many dents and scratches in my truck to be able to show it off with confidence!

I think that when I aimed my 520's, what it tells you to do is go to a flat place. The lights should be 25ft. from the wall and the top of the beam should be 4" below the height of the light on your vehicle. You can look here to see the instructions that PIAA recommends for the lights. :fireman:

Thanks for all the info...just in time as I was followed by a cop on a M'bike on the way home. Pulling into my drive I doused my lights as usual as the PIR floods outside my house came on. He wanted to talk so we wandered around to the front of my 4Runner.
What had happend was that someone "buzzed" me with their full beams as I went round a corner, so I flipped him a hi-beam back - the driver (a LandRover Discovery driver) obviously felt a bit pissed as he set the previously mentioned cop on me!
Now this gentlemen comes round to the front of my car and initially confuses the roof level snorkel with roof mounted spotlight (duh). After that initial point is cleared up he goes on to tell me I have "too many lights on my vehicle", and that if he caught me again he would "have to take action". Now it was a genuine mistake on my part to flip the Disco driver a 150 Watt "bird" but is there any law (UK or otherwise) concerning the NUMBER of lights you can have mounted on a vehicle?
Answers on the back of a postage stamp puh-lease!

I dont thinkthat there is a law about how many i think that they have to be symetrical but that is ti , i will check up with my "pet " cops to get the total word of law . just as a point of intreset how many lights do you have?

That's my whole point - I don't have many lights! Just stock headlights plus the IPF spotlights and Hella foglights! But the guy obviously thought I had blinded someone with a roof mounted spotlight (he came galloping up pointing at the snorkel intake which he thought was a spotlight). I personally think the Disco driver had been really p'd off that a Toyota had shown him up!

From what i can gather but this is not gospel yet you can have as many as you want as long as they are symetrical I.E. in pairs.
I will try to find out more but as luke said hole and arse spring to mind
