split second products
I have a few mods done to my truck and will not be boosting. Will any of the Split Second Products help to provide more uumph to the mods I've made? I'm talking real performance. I just don't think I'm getting all I can out of my NA motor with the few mods I've done. I want full potential without hurting emissions. Right now it seems a little sluggish after the auto switches gears, pick up a little in higher rpm then tapers off. I've cleaned the MAF sensor and the TB and have no CEL's. It just feels like there's something missing from the equation to tie everything together. I know some will chime in "get boosted" but that is not an option for me. I just want the best performance I can have with the current mods and hope that maybe some Split Second products can help.
Another thing I was wondering is the talk about tacomas running too rich. Is this true? Adding a controller would be the logical suggestion to balance the A/F mix and quite possibly get better MPG. Would I be wrong in saying that?
MY 3'' exhaust starts about 9'' past the muffler. I was wondering if this would be the real culprit in me not getting all I can out of my 3.4. I hear about backpressure but not any real claims to its effectiveness.
Now I remember having my 1997 tacoma x-cab 3.4l five speed 4x2, that little truck was fast. I barely beat a 5.0L mustang on day and he was real surprised. It was bone stock little truck and when I traded it in for my 2000 prerunner I kinda expected the same performance. I know the larger tires, auto trans and TRD lift could effect performance, but it was quite a bit slower than the little 4x2.
Any suggestions or comments would be great.

No, SS products won't do much for you in N/A form. Save your money. The most noticeable difference would be to change the gearing and/or shed weight. Another option is the valve body upgrade, giving you firmer and quicker shifts; but for the money that mod simply won't make enough of a difference.
If I was you, I would ditch the 3" exhaust and go 2.25 or 2.5, remove the tailgate for a pro-net (or similar), ditch the spare tire for a can of fix-a-flat, and look in to changing the rear gear ratio.

well 3'' is killing your power i would run 2.25'' from the cat back ditch the flowmaster and get a 18'' magnaflow muffller

From what I understand the lack of backpressure caused by the 3" exhaust is going to kill your low end power. The 3.4 seems to like the 2.25 best unless you are running boost.

It is not a lack of backpressure really that is killing your power, it is a lack of the scavenging effect of exhaust pulses. Backpressure doesnt help you at all. THE single BEST thing for any motor is absolutely NO backpressure whatsoever, unfortunately, with exhaust pulses, and the scavenging effect which you do want and need for better performance, it creates backpressure. Everyone uses the term backpressure incorrectly. Backpressure is a negative side effect of a positive equation of the way an exhaust really works. SO I would have to chime in and say ditch the big exhaust and go with 2.25 inch, or maybe 2.5 if you want the sound, but really 2.25 and a magnaflow or some other perfomance muffler will get you what you want, just remember you cant make any power with a muffler, only lessen the power loss, but your big fat 3" exhaust is allowing that exaust gas to expand, which allows it to cool, which makes it much heavier, and more dense, and less pressured, which means it is in no particular hurry to get out of your exhaust pipe, which means it isnt pulling the next exhaust pulse out after it. Which is bad, on a N/A motor, the only exhaust I would ever run is 2.5 or smaller. PM me if you have any questions. What mods do you have now?

Wow I really appreciate the replys, I think I will switch back to near stock ehaust size, maybe the 2.5. I also heard two of ya recommend 18 Magnaflow mufflers. What is the difference between the 60 series Flowmaster ans the 18 Magnaflow? I talked to Brian at URD and he quoted me About 650 bucks for the PSC1-003 and a Scan tool. He says that with me current 16 mpg I should find and increase in MPg with the SS Piggyback controller along with better performance. I have to say I might agree with Brian, If I can balance out my Air/fuel mix to a 12.0.1 throughtout the rpm band I should get performance from that. 650 for SS and scan tool + 150 bucks for new exhaust =800 bucks ouch.
