Ive been a competitive MX racer half my life and having a twin brother to compete with, I find that no matter what I do, I always try to do it faster than everyone else. This of course includes traffic, walking, tests at school, etc. Doing 65-70 on the highway just doesn't cut it for me, when someone passes me I get that very competitive feeling. Its almost an anxious feeling. Then the gas pedal goes down, I pass them back, set the cruise, and feel better. I end up getting about 17 on the highway, and around town.

Off roading in low gear for 10 miles doesn't seem to effect my MPGs one bit.
On this last tank I did my normal around town driving with 100 miles highway and I hit 274 miles (18mpg) on this tank with my norm more in the 240-250 range so I'm sure all hwy would be solidly over 300 miles a tank.

I calculate 17.4 mpg very consistently around town. My daily commute is only 1.5 miles on the highway so that doesn't effect anything really. On trips through the mountains I would average about 20-21 driving between 65-85. One trip last summer was with a 4x4 club doing 70-73 the whole trip on the highway and I managed to get 24.5 mpg being in the middle of the pack. I was stoked for that, i filled up right before jumping on the highway, drove 100 miles and put in barely over 4 gallons to top it off at the 100 mile mark. I would say 70 mph give or take a few is the most magical number for me. I don't have any highways that require 55 or 60 mph for much time at all so I have never wanted to go that slow.

That is the truth. I had a 99 Cobra that I ran around cruising at 75 and barely knocked down 21 mpg. But when I cruised at 110 in New Mexico for the better part of a tank, I was getting 27 mpg.

I think our trucks create too much drag to run that kind of rpm in OD. I know what you mean, my 96GT had a aluminum cobra block with forged internals, ported GT heads, cams and the works. It loved cruising 80-90mph all day long and got over 24-25 mpg at that speed.
