Spare Tire Swing out on 1st gen????
Hey,
I need to mount a 33X10.50 Spare on my 1st gen.
Here's my problem. It won't fit in the stock position under the bed (Too large, hits exhaust and is where my future shocks will be.
Don't want it on the roof or inside my cab.
SOOOOOO. The rear is the location.
Has anyone put a 2nd gen swing out on a 1st gen succesfully?
Otherwise who makes a good swing out bumper?
Also I thought about making an L shaped bar with aplate to mount it into a reciever hitch. Has anyone done that? Thanks for the help. -Seth

I know Mikey (mywifesaysimadumbass) has a rear tire carrier on his '85 Runner. I think he said he had a local guy fab it for him. Wouldn't hurt to PM him.
Here's the best pic I have of his setup.

Did this research a while back, I may do this eventually. Best shot is probably a local fabber, like this one http://www.skbpro.com/photos.html

Since you are in San Diego you might want to give these guys a call :
http://www.4x44u.com/pub/k2/am4x44u/...rts/canyon.htm
Canyon City 4X4
They do a very good job and are very reasonable and will make anything you want. I had a rear bumper made that had rear back up lights integrated into it so that they wouldn't get torn off if I ran into something. The guy I dealt with was Ed Abretske.
Would be worth a trip up the 15 to their shop in Pomona for a look around.

Thanks guys.
I like this one:

But I would want the tire lower. I want to have as much visability as possible. I figure the bottom of my 33 should be at the bottom of the bumper.

I guess there is really no way to mount a 33 on the gate so that it doesn't stick up in the window at all, or so that it doesn't hang in harms way. But I figure if I put it even with my bumper on the bottom, then the top will be minimal blockage.
I drove my girlfriends Pathfinder with a rear carrier up to Northern California and the tire didn't bother me as mucha s I thought it would. I always get those guys in tiny miatas crawling under my bumper at stoplights. Drives me nuts!!

Also, just realized I didn't answer your original question, the 2nd gen carrier on the 1st gen. There's a white one around NoVA that I spot every few years, but it never has the tire on the carrier. The carrier has nothing solid to connect to in the 1st gen rear quarter, somebody transplanted one and found a lot of infrastructure in there that can't be removed or installed for the 1st gen.

dajabr- When I said gate i meant a swing out in front of the gate. I kinda didn't think the 2nd gen mount would work. Oh well.
Erik B- I can't believe you fit that in there wow!!!! It appears that our rigs serve differnt functions. I take it by your avatar that you are more geared toward crawling. My rig will do more whoop hopping and some mild crawling. With that in mind, my shock setup will need to allow for more travel than what you had in the photo. I would either have to cut into the bed (No way) or lay them down connected to the rear of the frame. This would make it even harder to mount a tire there, let alone remove it easily. But at least others will know that a 34 is possible. Again I'm surprised it fit, did you have to relocate exhaust????
