I bought my 1999 new off the lot. It was the ONLY 5-speed 3.4 in the area. So I had to take what they had. My wife is weird in the fact that she hates automatics. And boy am I glad. The 5-speed 3.4 eats up the highway at higher speeds. Drop it into 3rd and it can scream with the DOHC's. I love surprising the ricers on the highway.

I have had NO reliability issues with my 3.4. Plus I got it at the end of the model year fully loaded Sport Edition for $27k....and I got 2K trade-in on my 1987 4Runner with 212K on it.

I have never owned a 2nd Gen...but boy the 3rd gen is sweet compared to my 22RE 1st Gen. I could barely climb mountains in CO...now I accelerate up them.

I still think the two are very similar except for the engine. Even the exterior is close. When I see a Runner on the road its sometime hard to tell whether its 2nd or 3rd gen untill I'm close. This isn't true when comparing 1st and 4th to the 2nd/3rd.
It's because you've not owned both. If you've owned both, you'd pick them out from a mile away. When I first got my 3rd, I missed my second, and it'd bring a tear to my eye when I'd see on like it on the road, but I can tell you, that even with the 500+ additional pounds I have bolted on my 3rd that it is still way peppier than my second.

Both have been manuals.

...and on the manual 3rd gen thing. They stopped making them after 2000. I looked into it at length before buying, because I wanted the newest manual I could get.
