Simple mod done today...
I just installed a new amp and a Pioneer subwoofer behind my seat in my pickup, leaving me with no room for gear storage back there. I got to thinking about what I could do about it when I came across an old military-style ammunition box. The cool thing about it is it had a rubber gasket around the top so it's watertight. So I painted it up and tossed some padding on it and voila, a nice gear holding box!
Lemme know what you think, paint's kinda rough but it doesn't need to look pretty, just hold my tools.

Do you have that bolted down? or maybe you are just trusting. I don't like to leave anything where anyone can just walk off with it. I have had stuff disappear before so now I am just paranoid.

Not bolted down yet. I thought about welding it in there, but I don't have access to the equipment, plus I don't know how. Eventually I will have it bolted in there though. I'm not too concerned with it getting stolen, just the fact that it might flop around back there worries me. Oh well, I'll be installing my roll bar soon, so I'll probably bolt in the box at the same time.

I remember seeing a rig a few months ago that had 2 larger sized ammo cans bolted on either side next to the rails. Looked pretty good. Too bad they the guy didn't put locks on 'em.
If you guys are looking for good ammo cans here's a pretty cheap place to get them online. The website's a bit confusing but their catalogs are pretty good.

If this link doesn't work just go to:

and look for the military surplus link.
A lot of cheap camping gear out here too. I've ordered from this place before and they're pretty reliable.

Wow, thanks for the link, these guys have some great stuff. I think I'll order another canister for the other side. Any idea if these ones are the watertight models. I would assume since they are meant to hold machine gun bullets, and you don't want those getting wet, but you never know.
Maybe I'll get one of those little gas cans too...

if there are handles on the box you could always slide it to one side or the other and chain it to the tie downs in the corner. It would look kind of tacky as a permanent fix, but until you can get it bolted or welded in, its better than just having it sitting there.

That is a coincidence. I picked up a pair of those 20MM ammo cans at the local gun shop/shooting range a couple of days ago. They were $11.99 each. I went out today and bought four eyebolts, and some fenderwashers and nuts so that I can make them into "locking" storage boxes. I am looking to bolt them down on the floor between the wheelwells in the bed with some 3/8" x 1" bolts. I might need more than two of them since I carry a lot of offroad gear in the bed. It is not that important right now, but I am taking the canopy off my truck next week, and I will be moving my roofrack from the canopy top to the cab top.
