Sliders vs. Nerf Bars

I've already picked up a few door dings and scratches from idiotic people at work who don't care about their vehicles. I had hoped the 4" lift would help alleviate some of those problems, but that's not the case so far. So, now I'd like to add a little body armor and am trying to decide between Sliders and Nerf Bars.

I mainly just need them for protection from other people more than anything. I don't plan to do any rock climbing, there's really nothing like that local anyway.

That being the case, what's the best option? What did you put on your truck? Are you happy with it?

I'd say sliders, because i think you can get them at a comperable price and they will look better, and be tougher than any nerf bar. I'd just get a simple set up, nothing too fancy. However, if you get some that come up at an angle, they will provide great protection against door dings. They will also provide some protection in the event of a car hitting you from the side. A larger truck they won't help you.

You can get a cheap set of sliders that will offer greater protection than an expensive set of nerf bars.

i vote for sliders too. getting nerf bars is like getting a Brush gaurd instead of a ARB bumper. more money and less protection. you'll regret it later.

I say sliders because let's say one day you think to yourself, "I'd like to go wheeling". If you find yourself in one of "those" situations, they could save your rocker panels or at least make for a convenient place to jack up your truck.

Sliders, good for more than ding protection.

My brother destroyed his passenger rocker panel just parking his truck in my cousins yard, go for the sliders, there should be no question in your mind about which to go with. Hmmm...spend a lot of money on something that is not at all function, will still get dings from doors because they aren't that thick, and will do more damage to my truck if I accidentally come down on something or get something that is solid, functional, and makes people regret hittin gme with their doors...NO BRAIN NECESSARY, go with the sliders!

Sounds like the vote is for sliders. I kind of like the look of the Bentup ones. Thanks for all the input guys!

Another quick question on this subject, which is the stronger or preferred method for putting on sliders? Bolt on or welding? Any reason to avoid one or the other?

Why did 4Crawler Offroad use a bolt-on design? There are a number of benefits:

* A bolt-on bar offers ease of installation, no welding required
* A bolt-on bar can be welded on if desired, it is not necessarily true that a weld-on bar can be bolted on
* A bolt-on bar can be fully pre-finished, unlike a weld-on bar
* Some vehicles come with factory mounting holes for step bars, so these are used where possible

Why does 4Crawler Offroad use a self-tapping bolt vs. a clamp-on mount?

* While clamp-on may seem like a slick way to go, it complicates the design.
* The clamp must be a tight fit to the frame, you also need room on all four sides of the frame to install the clamp.
* Any gas or brake lines, e-brake cables, brackets, etc. on the inside of the frame may need to be relocated.
* By mounting to the outside of the frame, its possible to place the mounting brackets where they work best for supporting the bar, rather than placing them where there is room for them.
* The bars can be mounted with either self-tapping bolts only or with a combination of self-tapping, thru-bolts, or sleeved-bolts for the bottom holes.
