Sending unit

Might be a dumb question but I'll go with it. 99 4runner 3.4 limited edition... is my fuel gauge/sending unit part of the fuel pump assembly or is it the other circular one on top of tank? Sorry in advance... but I'm learning here.. always ran jeeps for off roading.. first toyota and I love it. But fuel gauge doesn't work.. when I bought it it read half full and eventually would go down to about a quarter and then I'd run out. Replaced pump now reads full all the time.

There is a TSB for this, certain 1998-2000 4runners came with defective parts off the factory line, some needed just the sending unit and others both sending unit and inclinometer behind the dash, if you take it to a dealer they will charge you for the updated parts and labour. I complained it was a safety issue and should be a recall, as running out of fuel in freezing or desert conditions would be dangerous or lethal, as would loosing power brakes and steering on a major highway. Cost me $800 for toyotas known defective parts. And make sure if you need the chip in the dash the dealer should have you fill out a form for toyota so you get a chip with the correct Odometer reading or it will be zero'ed out. Fun Fun. you can also try recalibrating the fuel gauge, but there is a high probability your 99 has defective parts in it.

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can get the dealer parts and install myself.. try to save a few bucks anyways. Might shoot myself in the foot.. but id rather not spend 800 bucks at this point.

I should say it was around $800 all in, just get all the parts that the TSB advises for your VIN and you should be good to go, they will print you out the TSB procedure I'm sure.
