im looking for a basket/ safari type rack for my 1986 toyota 4runner

i cant seem to find any though.

could someone help me out please?

Look on Yakima's site, they carry the Load Warrior.
I have it on my '91, and Todd has it on his '88.

They look sharp.
My website is down until further notice, or I'd post some URLs for you.

We just got back from a day of wheeling, and have some close up pics.
If my server comes up later, you can see what the rack looks like on a 1st gen 4Runner.

so i need to buy the actual racks that bolt to my roof, and the basket right?

im not sure where id mount the rack, since i see no rain gutters.

 

You need the crossbars and the gutter mounts, and the rack will hook onto it via it's hardware.

You can use either Thule or Yamkima crossbars and gutter mounts.
They will both work with the Yak rack.

I have a free server that my website is not on, and I will upload some pics to it soon, so you can see Todd's rack.

He has also customized it much like I have mine with an ax mount, shovel mount, and Hi-Lift mount.

Also to give you an idea on this rack, look in our Tech section here and look for my write-up in the Off Road Enhancement area for my rack.

 

i think that you can buy those rails that factory roof racks have and install them on your roof...or..something ... not sure though..hah

 

The Yakima Load Warrior also sits very well, and lower on factory rails than aftermarket crossbars.
There are a few members here who have the Load Warrior mounted with factory rails.

That is the shovel and Hi-Lift on the drivers side, and an ax on the passenger side.

He is using the same Slee Off Road Hi-Lift mounts as on my rack.
He made the ax & the shovel mounts himself.

In the Tech section for my rack stuff I have the Yakima ax mount they came out with a few months back.
It hooks to the side and holds the ax perfectly.

It is a good deal if it has to foot brackets and in good shape.. I paid about $125 for mine with out the mount feet.. For a 1st gen Runner, I would just seal it, and bolt it tight thru the roof.. Use acorn nuts and stainless hardware.. back it with a large fender washer..

 

thats what im thinking, just bolt the sucker to the roof.

 

Oh.. I did see a page with a guy that had a pick-up that bolted the basket itself to the roof.. the brackets that come with it are very well suited for this.. and it would be very low (it would sit on the roof in fact.. If I had a glass roof, I would find a way to bolt the Surco crossbar to the roof, and mount the rack to that.. that way you are off the roof enough to attach stuff with straps to the slats and it would look a little better (IMHO)

 

it would also disperse the weight better

Do you think you can throw a 33" spare up there on my 88? I see they make a mount for the rack. Who has good prices for the Yak stuff on the web?

Check ebay, they may have what you need.

I have been eyeing some rack accessories on there myself.

Try "toyota rack" for a search.

 

My Surco was fine with a 32" up there.. I think a 33" would be fine.. I am looking into a way to make a bar between the 2 Thule bars to be notched and bolted under the front & rear bars, then use a "J" bolt to wrap under that bar (kinda like the old rear wheel drive cars had in the trunk) and use that to hold my spare, but be able to remove it and have nothing showing when it is off.

 

Lee, got a JC Whitney cat. lyin' around? They sell a spare tire holder similar to what you need. Its for holding a spare inside a pick-up bed. I think you can then put a lock on the cylinder so noone can walk off w/ your tire.

Well I can't remember what the actual load rating is on the basket, but I think that if it had extra load bars it would be better. I mean the basket is not well supported in the center, so it is a little bent from my spare, and me sitting up there working with the CB antenna, and lights. "Do you have the bent supports than attach to the bed?" Not sure what you are referring to. My canopy is drilled and raingutter brackets are bolted on for the rack to attach to.
