You are going to miss me.
It has been two days since disconnected the battery cable ....
I think this was starting to look like it was going to be the longest whinning  thead YotaTech has ever experienced, BUT plain talk thinking from "ravencer" aka Chris , and PhD thinking from a Canadian no less , "MTL_4Runner" aka Jamie finally persuaded me to pull the plug, so to speak, and reboot the ECU and ....
IT WORKED !!! :bounce2:
I also have to give props to John Lombardo at IPS who also suggested that I try disconnecting the battery cable, based on the experience he had with a Ford Taurus. Now there is a good comparison. :monkey:
All I can say is the performance now is the way it was before the VB upgrade, EXCEPT that the shifts are firmer and quicker.
Thanks to all who had the patience to deal with me and my problem and guide me to a resolve. If I wake up tomorrow and the problem has returned, do not worry because you will not hear about it. I will take the next boat off the Island, trade my 4R in on a Ford Taurus and join another news group.

Peter, that's great to hear! I've learned that anytime that we drastically increase or decrease the air flow, it's critical to pull the battery cable and not just the EFI fuse. I do it every time I off-road while I'm either deflatiing or inflating my tires.
Rock on! I'm glad to hear it all worked out!

The EFI fuse (even though it clears the codes) must not fully reset everything. I have been using the negative cable because that will reset everything for sure (being the conservative engineer I am ). I would need to see a wiring diagram to see why the codes reset but some memory remains.

Just so we're all clear on who won the super bowl tickets, it was me that first mentioned resetting the computer.
So, Peter, my address will be PM'd to you!

Well, I am a PATS fan and Montreal is closer to Massachusetts than Tennessee, BUT my mother was and all my family is from the the South ... in the USA, but I am not a Red Neck, although I do hate cold weather; however, most of my friends right now are Yankees except for the ones that are ....
Boy, I am so-o-o confused. :pat:

Codes? What codes? There were no codes.

I have to clean up a mistake I made --- well, it was more of a typo.
I was pay homage to JOHN LOMBARDO, transmission professional ... expert ... doctor ... YotaTech lurker ... wizard par excellence .... and I inaccurately abbreviated IMPORT PERFORMANCE TRANSMISSIONS with the acronym IPS, instead of IPT. I should have been more cognizant of the letters because they sound all to similar to the truth ... I-PI-TY --- anyone who does not have their VB recalibrated by IMPORT PERFORMANCE TRANSMISSIONS.
Am I absolved big brother John?

Hi All.
I've been kind of lurking here and following this thread for a few days.
I'd like to jump in to say hi and introduce myself to those of you who don't know me.
My name is John Lombardo and I am co- owner of Import Performance Transmissions (more commonly known as IPT). I've been in the transmission business for almost 18 years now and have seen and repaired my fair share of drivetrain failures.
Although I'm not a Toyota truck owner, I'd like to drop in here from time to time and perhaps be of assistance in answering people's questions in regards to automatic transmissions and drivetrains, if no one minds.
I'm also always available via email or by visiting my discussion forum (which I try to check every day) to answer questions of a specific nature that I may not have had the opportunity to address here on YotaTech.
I would also like to thank everyone here who I've had the pleasure of dealing with and meeting in person for the kind words. I hope that I can live up to your accolades.

You won't believe what I found
I just found a Toyota TSB that speaks precisely to the problem I was experiencing and if I had known it before, we could have avoided all the fun and camaraderie we shared for the last week. At least I now know I am not crazy.
TSB (TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH) TC002-03 addresses the procedure for resetting the ECM Memory Function on any 2000 – 2003 vehicle that has any sort of transmission work done. It simply says to disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes.

will have immediate drivability issues- not issues that occur 50+ miles
later. Actually, by the time 50 miles pass, every trans that I've ever dealt
with has relearned it's basic settings, if it has any adaptive capability.
Having done several vb upgrades on later model Toyota vehicles, drivability was
always as expected when we were done, and disconnecting the battery was never
necessary.
Furthermore, most of your symptoms seemed engine related- low vacuum, lack
of power uphill, etc.
I think it was probably more likely that when the vehicle had been run for
quite a few miles with all of the additional hardware (piggybacks, etc),
coupled with the off the chart air density that results from extremely cold
temperatures, the ecu needed to reboot.
I remember you telling me that this was basically the first high speed run
that you were able to make since the seventh injector and it's support
equipment were installed.
I wouldn't be surprised if you did need to disconnect your battery from time
to time in the future.
Let me know how it goes.

Hey John,
Any insight into why the EFI fuse will reset the codes in the ECM but yet it takes disonnecting the negative cable to clear the memory? Is there a separate computer controller for the transmission somewhere? I would be curious if you knew anything about this.

Apparently there is always a certain amount of "keep alive memory" involved with automotive systems.
There are even certain service procedures recommended by one of the major transmission technical services that include not only disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes- but also removing both cables, touching them together for thirty seconds while someone else pushes the horn button, turns on the lights, etc.
The reasoning behind this is to allow any capacitors to bleed off or any other type of residual voltage to completely be taken out of the picture. This is referred to as "brain deading" the computer.
This step is effective in erasing all memory, just about every time.
On a side note, nowadays, people in the automotive service industry are apprehensive to disconnect certain batteries unnecessarily. There are many vehicles out there now that react very adversely to doing this. Some vehicles (mostly European) must actually go back to the dealer to have their basic settings restored after a battery disconnect or they will barely run.
