I just got stationed here at ft.drum in northern NY,my truck(01 tacoma) came with me from ft. sill oklahoma rust free,after only two months here the snow and salt has left little surface rust spots on my truck(mostly the lower half towards the back). I've all but lost an 84 4runner to rust and I don't want this to happen again. I've been toying with the idea of lining the whole thing inside and out,line-x or durabak. Has anyone used durabak before? what are the pro's and con's of a job like this versus a new paint job and heavy coats of wax?

 

for starters you need to wash your truck more. When they are putting salt and de-icer on the road you should wash your truck once a week even if it's going to get dirty again. Also home Depot sells a type of Rust-Oleum paint that stops rust it is supposed to be invisible, but I wouldn't spray it on the body, but it works well on the under carriage.

I had a coupe specks of rust on the door of my car, scraped the rust off with a razor down to the bare metal, then took some left over paint from the body shop, and put a tiny amount over the spots with a hobby paint brush.

 

the little specks you see are likely just particulate from roads and stuff in salt/sand/de-icer. It gets on your car, kinda sticks in the clearcoat, rusts, and looks like it is your truck rusting. It should come off with clay-bar and/or a good amount of scrubbing with a non-abrasive clear-coat cleaner.

To protect the underbody, you need something very durable, and easy to apply so you dont end up having to clean every little bit of the underbody. I have not used anything myself, but was planning on using POR-15 to coat everything not body, maybe this summer
