First off I have an '87 4-runner with a 22re and an auto tranny. 2 weeks ago, I went wheeling with some friends and wound up sucking in some water through a water crossing. I stopped the truck immediately, got pulled out, and towed home. The next day I drained the oil, pulled the plugs, and cranked it over to get the water out. I also pulled the intake plenum and cleaned the water out of that. I haven't had much time to put it back together so it sat for about 2 weeks before I got to it (it's no fun not having my truck).
So tonight I put it all back together and tried to start it. It turns over and almost sounds like it will start but then just kept turning over w/o starting. I tried it several times and had the same results. Anyone have any ideas on what it may be? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

did the coil possibly short out? check for spark and fuel

 

I am getting spark. How would I check if I'm getting fuel? When I pulled the plenum I left the fuel rail alone. Would water effect the injectors?

 

water could mess up the injectors, but more likely messed up their wiring or ecu controller.....

take of the intake and spray starting fluid into the throttle body while someone is trying to start it. stand off to the side in case of a very rare but possible front fire (like a backfire, but out the intake). if it runs for a couple seconds or as long as you are spraying then its fuel related

 

Could it be that I shorted out the AFM or the TB having water run through them? Will the vehicle still start if either is shorted or will it just run like crap?

You goota try the start fluid.....
The AFM is pretty durable where water is concerned. If you just sucked the water inthrough the intake and did not submarine the front end then I can't see anything in the TB getting hosed up. You have spark so for me it sounds like fuel, again if you did not submerge the front end the wiring should not have gotten so soaked it shorted out start fluid will let you know it can run.
