I'm still missing about an inch of coolant in my overflow every week or 2. I figure it's probably a HG leak, but this may go on for a while (it already has for over a year) before it totally blows out the HG. I'm planning on putting a rebuilt (w/ OEM parts) engine in it sometime in the future anyways, so I'm just rollin' with it. Still gets me everywhere (long trips even) and it still has lots of power too, so I'm just going to keep doing regular maintenance and drive it into the dirt!

Mine doesn't make strange noises, it just shakes a little and the rpms jump between 1000 and 1400. I smelled the exhaust right after I started it up today and it smelled weird. Not really sweet, but not exactly like exhaust normally smells either. Then after about 5 seconds, it started smelling like normal exhaust again. Probably a HG, but still not sure since my compression is in spec. Now I'm just content with the "we'll see how it goes" mindset. It's running good and it still gets me from point A to point B.
JFCruiser,
I don't know if you should be considering a rebuild or not since we don't know your symptoms. The only reason I want to do a total rebuild to mine, as opposed to just changing the HGs, is because I have nearly 200K on it now and plan on driving this truck for many years to come - I'll probably never sell it. I don't want to do the HGs only to have to do another major repair soon afterwards - I would rather just make sure everything is new/rebuilt and not worry for a long time. Since yours only has 50K on it, I would just R&R the HGs (but only if that's in fact your problem - diagnose it first!!!) and be done w/ it.

I would suggest a fuel leak down test both hot and cold. At higher temps Gasoline is at more of a gaseous state which would increase the leak down due to less resistance.
In other words the injectors may leak less when it is cold because the fuel is denser.
Other than that from what I am reading about the torque of the heads is if you were to re torque them you would want to loosen them fully then re-torque. With no leak down at high temps the metal expands and contracts with temperature change so this may be the issue as well. I would start with a cold pressure check of the fuel rail after a hot pressure check.
