Roof Rack weight capacity?

I wanted to find out if its ok to put some gear on my 2002 4runner factory roof rack... What is the weight capacity? I plan on putting my surfboards up there as well as a sea kayak. For the kayak i have the thule hullaport (j-cradles) that fasten on the factory rack...

I think the capacity is 200lbs?? I have had a 14' canoe on top as well as 2-12' kayaks at different times.

it appears to be 165lbs... i dont know if this applies to the parts screwed to the roof, or just the crossbars, or what... so take it as you wish

its probably the cross bars and not the supports, the supports will take a lot more.

I've carried around 200LB of camping gear in my surco safari basket attached to the stock rails several times. Never had any problems.

thats what i need to hear.

same basket in your avatar? looks like what im trying to do.
was thinking of using the stock cross bar hardware to attach...easy removal is necessary.

how did you attach yours to the rails?

Ya its the same one. You can't use the stock cross bars though. You have to purchase a set of mounting brackets that slide into the stock slide rails. Its a really good rack, I'm happy with it. Good price too

1 Bull Elk, too much weight

1 Whitetail Buck, just right

But the Elk rides on a trailer nicely, there is room for any Buck deer in the back of the 4Runner.

Just light weight stuff should be carried on the roof, spare tire, luggage, canoe/boat, coolers. Anything heavier will make it top heavy.

As far as Thule's fit guide goes, 110 pounds if using the factory rails. 165 pounds if you use their bare roof (Aerofoot 400XT) rack. It will most likely hold more but these are the weights they use to lower their liability.

I have put two 8' whitewater kayaks and two surf boards on the factory rack without a problem. I now have the Yakima rack and I've used it quite a bit including the following combinations:
5 whitewater kayaks and 5 paddles
2 kayaks 2 bikes and 2 paddles
1 canoe and 4 kayaks (this was borderline and looked ridiculous)

Stock rail says max load is 165 LBS. evenly distributed. That is printed on the rails themself.

I have the Yakima Loadwarrior basket and I've put about 150lbs of stuff in the basket plus the basket's weight (30lbs maybe) and it still supports fine but I wouldn't push it.

The Yakima just mounts right to the factory rails perfectly and can be on and off in under 15 minutes.

I think with the surf boards, kayaks and such I'd be more worried about the wind forces than the gravitational forces. Especially at highway speeds.

I have had 16 foot kayak on the stock rack and drivin highway speeds many times with out problems.

I did just ad a Yakima bar over the front doors to have more stable hold when hauling the long kayak. But that is after years of just using the stock rack alone.

Surfboards are no problem at all.

Surprised to see surfers on here, for a minute it didn't seem like anybody liked the water on here! Just wondering, when you guys load up the boards are you guys wearing protection? (ie. board bags) Or are you guys going bare?

thats on the crossbars and i wont be using them. im refering to the rails the crossbars mount to.
so if each bar could hold 165#, im thinking that the rails would support ~330#

i have an AL basket that was on the FG shell of the P/U. i could stand on it = >200lbs
i want to mount it (& easily removable) to my stock rails.
hardware will be the next thing to figure out.
usage would be camping gear.

i dont think i could get deer up there, but thanks for the reference.

PS - surf naked
