I don't get it. If you don't care what it looks like (and are willing to do THAT to it) then why not just live with scratches?

Y'know, it's funny, if my truck was just blue (stock color was the ugly medium blue) and everything else was exactly the way it is now, everyone would see a sensibly built trail rig/ daily driver. But since it's painted the way it is, everyone assumes I'm some numbskull show truck pansy... I've been a trailhound for decades, I have more trail miles behind me than most on this site have on the highway. This truck was painted this way before I bought it, and it really is a very nice job. If you see it in person, after you get past the eye-popping paint and interior, you will see the scrapes and scratches and a few dents too. Look in the bed and it's beat to hell, right now it's full of scrap metal. It's a real truck.

But I personally would never lineX the exterior...

I agree with you, unless you want to get even worse mileage and performance, don't do it - like DJ eludes to - that stuff is HEAVY. Now, if you like that "done in my backyard" look that Line-X embodies (IMO), then why not just a rattle can a desert camo paintjob or something else low maintenance/easily repaired?

I'm curious what it would cost to do an entire rig... Gotta be alot. Probably a couple of lunchbox lockers worth of $$ or more...

I wonder if the top of that runner was off when he sprayed it.
I'm willing to bet it wasn't. I dunno, but I'll bet it's stuck on there.
That would drive me nuts. Besides the weight & the $$.

well, i wouldn't suggest doing it just for weight issues, but if you do decide to go that route, make sure you take the top off, fenders, hood, doors, possibly gas tank door, and anything else that will be opened or possibly replaced at one point and spray or roll them seperatly. i can't remember how much weight it added in the bed of my f-150, i want to say 200lbs, but spread that over the whole vehicle and your lookin at some definent weight added, resulting in loss of power and mpg.

Only been to H'burg in it once that I can remember - had a load of tires in it.

 

Rhino will weigh considerably more than paint...I think I read somewhere that a Rhino-lined vehicle would weigh 300-400 lbs more from the lining, just depends on the size of the rig.

That is a nice 87, but that red interior would KILL me!

 

A rhino liner would weigh THAT much?

HOw about a pick up bed spray on rhino or line-x liner? How much would that weigh? YOu don't think that if you peeled it off the bed of a pickup (Yes I know you can't do that to a spray on - but for discussions sake) that you couldn't pick it up and carry it?

 

i think when my old truck was sprayed, it was about 2-300 extra pounds

 

Coatings are heavier than people think. There's between 18 & 30 pounds of paint all total on a typical car after the solvents have gassed off. (Less on some cheap imports and more on a custom paint job.) Lets say that these bedliner coatings are 1/3 as heavy a substance (not as dense) but they are much much thicker. Auto paint is typically 6 mils thick in total, bedliner spray is up to 1/4" thick - that's 40 times thicker. So the coating would weigh 240 pounds if we are correct in it's density. Armorcoat clear is only 4 times thicker than paint but about the same density so it would weigh 72 pounds.

 

I'm a LINE-X dealer. LINE-X weighs .7 pounds per square foot at 1/8" thickness, which is all you need on the exterior. Here are some pics. These are scanned, so there's some loss of resolution.

Im all for industructable things but it aint going to stop dents.What happens down the road when and if you get in a fender bender.That could be a mess to deal with.Guy at work did his jeep.Made it hard to get clean all though his was done in black.I thought about just spraying the rockers they take the most abuse from rocks and road crap.Mine has some crinkle mixed in with the paint on the rocker panels from the factory but dosent look like it will hold up that well.

 

It took two gallons to coat my Tacoma bed twice and two gallons sure don't weigh near what some of you are talking,Lol. If any of you guy's are having yours done how about weighing your truck before and after.

 

why not just coat it with the black out door carpet? It would be cheaper and you could wipe your feet on it before you got in.

 

But then they would have to get some fuzzy dice and neon.
