I'm exploring replacing my 99 Runner's under hood insulation. I see dealerships get around $160 for the piece.

Has anyone done this with a universal fit replacement? Any recommendations on brand/size/best price?

My theory is to remove the existing insulation and use it as a template to cut a new one. I'm thinking it's probably wise to go ahead and buy the clips from the dealership for good secure mounting of the new piece.

I apologize in advance if this has been covered elsewhere but I honestly could not find a whole lot of discussion on the topic here or on T4R.org.

I welcome some input. Thanks!

 

Umm why would you want to do any of that?

 

The blanket under there now is saturated with oil from when I had leaking valve covers-since repaired.

There are also some tears in it which I am afraid will eventually cause the blanket to get in the way of the fan or other moving parts.

 

I've never replaced that in a 4runner, but have insulated the underside of hoods on a couple turbo cars I have to prevent paint from discoloring.

The universal kit will be more of a pain in the ass than it is worth, and will look like junk afterword.

Look into a product called Lizard Skin, it's a spray on heat and sound deadener, I now coat the inside of every car/truck I build in the stuff, it works phenominal, and looks great too.

 

I haven't even paid attention to any insulation under my hood. In fact, I don't know that there is any or ever has been. But, I'd second the Lizard Skin recommendation. A buddy of mine sprayed down his Camaro when it was ripped apart and it did a lot for the road/rattling/random noises. At least as far as a sound insulator, it worked pretty well.

 

Mine is worn in some area's and the heat from 19 years has also done it's toll on it.
If I was going to replace mine, I would do as you said, remove old one carefully and use as a template, and make new one.
IMHO the only down side to fabbing your own one is, I believe, can't remember off hand, OEM replacement is molded which makes for an exact fit.
It doesn't look difficult to do though and will just improve it's purpose and look.

That's a good point go to Jim's used Toyota truck parts its off like York and 270, I also hear of yota yard and Jim's yota yard, something like those gotta get them cheap in good condition. I was out at Jim used Toyota trucks last week and they at least 5-6 3rd gens with rear end damage the under blanket has to be good.

mission accomplished-$20 find at Jim's Yota Yard-they had one left-thanks reaj for the reference.

Clips required-10 to hold it in place-they break right off when removing them.

Mine came off at the car wash, I threw it away. Now it looks like my truck has skin cancer on the hood. It most surely has the purpose of not baking your paint on the hood.

 

How is the noise? My e23 BMW (735i) was brutal while it had no hood insulation.

 

Are you suggesting engine heat (190F) baked off your factory paint?

To give you some analogies to show how ridiculous your claim is: haver you ever driven your 4Runner when it's snowing?

There is not even enough heat to melt the snow. Take an infrared thermometer and see how hot it gets in the sun. It will be way hotter than the engine can ever make it. Not to mention almost ALL economy cars do not have hood blankets.

They are engine noise blockers.

 

All I know is my paint was fine until then. As far as talking smack through your keyboard, real tough there Dailydrive. Gotta love the know it all people on the internet ready to smite you on anything you say that isnt 100% accurate. Im no effin genius, but i know when my paint started to oxidize. Sooooo, just go easy on chastising people buddy.

And as far as the noise, its way louder. Especially with the K&N. Its kinda annoying how loud it is. Its not a "Hey that sounds good" kinda loud. Like a Hemi Cuda,mmmmmm

 

Not to take any sides on this matter ( name calling of any kind just turns out bad ) .
But my 98 4Runner LE has never had a hood insulator. The silver paint on the hood has a good shine and looks fresh after 16 seasons .
I would like an insulator for noise reduction though. Would the spray help, ( Lizard Skin) or just hold in more heat in the long run?

 

I removed mine about 10 years ago after a mouse kept stealing sections of it. My hood paint, apart from paint chips, looks perfectly fine.

IMHO, it's either used to muffle engine noise, or as a fire-suppression blanket (that drapes over a burning engine as soon as the plastic fasteners melt).

Either way, my truck does not miss it.
