regular oil filter to filter automatic transmission fluid
Hi guys
Can I use regular oil filter to filter automatic transmission fluid? I want to put engine spin on oil filter in series with external transmission cooler, to make closed circle, to bypass stock radiator. I read a lot on this forum but never met any info, if regular oil filter can be used to filter transmission fluid. Any input greatly appreciated.

I run a regular oil filter before my B&M cooler. Change it once a year. Overkill, I'm sure, but Amsoil fluid runs about $250 a fill so it needs to last.
You'll have issues trying to integrate the filter mount if you keep the stock hard lines. I ripped them all out and put metric/AN adapters in the trans ports so I could use -6 fittings and flexible hose. Filter mounts take 3/8" NPT fittings, and as a bonus it's also an easy place to add a temp sensor for a temp gauge.

What kind of issues with hard lines are you talking about , it is difficult installation of a filter mount or ID of hoses or hard lines, would you be more specific please??

Suggestion. Once you do this, put a pressure gauge in the test port of your transmission. The filter is going to cause *some* pressure drop in the circuit and you don't want to drop it too low if you can help it. Test cold and hot, as well.
As for the hard lines, they're just generally going to be a PITA to work with since they're...well...hard. Flexible braided hose and AN fittings are really the way to go on this. Otherwise in 6 months you'll be chasing stupid little leaks here and there.

this may be of use to you i rember reading that if you get a K&N or Royal Purple filter for oil that they are suposed to be better for filtering synthetic fluid and as ATF is way thiner than oil this may be usefull to install one so that it could be better catching anything unwanted

I'm due to change out my in-line filter, and I was thinking of switching to a spin-on one instead. I've got the B&M 70264 cooler already on my two trucks. As long as I'm going to get ATF all over me, I might as well make the next change easier on myself. I should have done the spin-on install in the first place.

thats the one I run but mine has a temp sensor. Looks like that one might have one too. Ditch that puny little filter and run the largest filter you can find like the K&N 3001. You will add about an extra quart of trans fluid to your system

Changing automatic transmission oil is old age adage, as oil degraded over time, not because it became dirty. Most new cars are filled with high quality synthetic oil that's good for the life of the car. Planned obsolescence conspiracy theorists will disagree of course.

thats like my tdi if you can find a shop that has all the speicaly tools it will run 300 plus for a fluid change they claim its lifetime fluid ( what they think the trani should last ) i had it changed just to make me feel warm and fuzzy inside and it has 137000 and counting on it
id get the biger filter a little extra atf to use wont hurt anything as for extending the trani life by double no way

Of course it's a load of . The manufacturer already put in a screen filter to catch anything large enough that might cause a problem.
