red fluid in the tcase??
hey folks!
spent the morning at the shop changing out the fr/rr diff fluids, front was good colour, rear was chocolate milk. oops!! got water somewhere, bad me. i went to do the tcase, removed the fill plug, dipped my pinkie in to check the level and it came out red. so im thinking atf as toy 283 said in one of his posts. hmmm, put the fill plug back in and finished some other work on the runner. stopped at the stealer on the way home and asked about what is supposed to be in there. he says 75w90, i said whats in there is red, like atf. he looks puzzled and goes to check with a tech. comes back and says no, your 93 uses 75w90. he did say that the supras used some indestructable gear oil that is red and 80$/litre. maybe the po was a fanatic and used this stuff, dont know and cant find out. parts guy says if your not sure what it is, get it out. so, its back to the shop next saturday to change out the red stuff for 75w90. unless, anybody here has any ideas they want to toss out? tia.

˟˟˟˟in' stealer idiots. I bet if they put gear lube in it and something happened, then they wouldn't cover it as their mistake either.
Typically for Toyota Trucks...
If you have an auto, then your XFcase gets ATF
If you have a manual, then your XF case gets 75W90

hey guys!
thanks for the replies, seems the consensus is atf. im not sure how long that has been in there, its still nice and red and doesnt smell burned. im thinking to just replace it anyway, then im set for the spring time wheeling. the next major job will be the transmission, flush out the old stuff, clean up the pan, new gasket/filter and put it all back together and fill her up. looks like i have some reading to do!

The trans and transfer case are a single unit and can only be taken apart from inside the trans. They both use the same atf and it travels through the whole unit. They definitley don't use gear oil or anything near that viscous. Stay away from whoever told you that. A flush will change the ATF in the tranny and transfer case. Good luck with it.

well, just to update everyone, the 93 auto v6 does use atf in the tcase. seems the guys at the stealer didnt scroll down far enough when checking their online/inhouse data base. i had to reiterate the specs of my rig several times for them as each time someone new came along (parts, service & techs) they would say 'gear oil' and i would ask if they were sure. got some strange looks and hmmms when it was finally figured out. wish me luck tomorrow, im going under the rig again to finish what should have been an easy job. thanks for all your replies and insight, that is what makes this a great group!
