Rear Wiper, Defroster, inside switch dead, and then the remote problem **SOLVED!!!**

I have done several searches and cannot find an answer...only more questions to my problem. I want to see if anyone thinks these issue are tied to each other.

Here we go:

2000 4Runner SR5

1) My remote stopped locking and unlocking the vehicle. BUT it will roll the rear window down. Has new batteries...

2) Rear window will not roll down with inside switch, no the lock is not on.

3) Rear wiper does not work, rear defroster does not work.

4) Window will roll up and down with key in the back door.

5) Rear hatch light would come on when the door was opened, then would go off after 10 sec. Now it does not work either, except with the switch.

WHAT I HAVE DONE:

1) Checked all fuses...all are good
2) New Batts in remote
3) Tried reseting the window by rolling it all the way down, then up and holding.
4) Checked connections at the Rear Door ECU and all dash switches
5) Jiggled the wiper

What the heck is going on here and does anyone think they could be related to the remote not working. I can't find my other key fob to see if it works.

Also, there is an antenna on the rear door ECU...is this just for the window roll down or does the rear ECU control the keyless entry too. I am stuck here!

Thanks for any responses in advance, though I am not very hopeful as others have had this problem with no resolution.

And another weird thing I just discovered. If I open the rear hatch and push the lock button, it lets off a constant beep like it does if a door is open...so the remote must be working. It does not do this for any other door...could this thing have a valet mode I have activated?

i was looking over the wiring diagram for the rear window and it said that if any of the sensors that tells it that a door is open it will not let the key-less entry work. might want to check all the sensors and make sure they are working right.

this one is for the power to the rear window.

All the sensors (window position, door open, wiper down) checked out as fine and the ECU has power...fuse was a little corroded but it works...swapped it anyway just to check. Other things on the same fuse work fine. Ugh I don't want to buy this part!

I think I saw someone say $384, but not sure... I inquired at toyota-parts.com but haven't gotten a reply yet...

Couldn't find one on ebay

wow that's a lot of money, if i was you i would go threw and check all the sensors and that for the door lock detention system.. below is a link to it, and im thinking the more it sounds like something stopped working and is causing all your problems. seconds is a link to your fsm if u need to.

even taking it to toyota for them to look at might be cheaper then just buying an ecu box and it not fix the problem.

My friend has the exact same problem with his 2000 4Runner. He hasn't done too much troubleshooting yet, but I will let you know if he finds anything.

All the sensors check out fine. With all the stuff that Rear Door Relay box (ECU) controls, it sounds like that is the most logical problem. Found it for $335...apparently this box is a know problem and now has a new part number.

FIXED IT!!!

So I break down and order the rear door window relay or rear door ECU as some call it. It arrives today so I race home to finally fix the problem. Take the door apart, install the relay...NOTHING! Actually it made it WORSE! Now the rear window will not roll down with the keyless entry remote...so I'm pretty ticked....this part was almost $400 and the invoice says NO RETURNS ON ELECTRICAL PARTS.

So I start thinking maybe the new part needs to be initialized or programmed to work with my remote, but it still didn't fix the rear wiper/defroster issue. I come in the house and start searching online for an answer and find nothing. I start searching because now I'm pissed... I pull the rubber cover off the wire loom where it comes out of the top of the hatch opening and I can't believe my eyes. There is one wire completely cut in half, and two others have the insulation sliced but no damage to the copper. I touch the broken wire together and the rear cargo light comes on. Punch the remote and the door lock. SO PROBLEM SOLVED! I reconnected the wire, protected the others, and all works again in 4Runner land. One problem...I am now stuck with a $400 part which may not be returnable. Ugh!

Hi guys,
Its been a year, Since first problem has occurred, first, a rear hatch lock stopped working. Then rear wiper, then rear washer, then rear window defogger, then inside rear light was gone, then a fuse responsible for rear components was burned a few times. I was disconnecting all those back door options one by one off. Even I physically disconnected wiring I wasn’t sure what is causing problem. And just recently back door window stuck in lower position. To make it short, I went back to reading forums and in my own post i found a right answer. A forum member “KBALL” from Toyota nation sad to check wires going from car body to rear hatch, I pulled back a rubber boot, BINGO all 15 wires were broken off. I soldered all wires, reconnected all components and everything works since then.

Regards

I am going through this right now with a 99 ltd I just bought, I cant wait to go home a check the wiring in the loom. I had to put 12v to the window motor to get it in the up position, can I ask if you did the same. Also was there enough slack on the wires to reattach, was it the top or bottom of the loom.

Thank You Thank You Thank You,
I went right to the harness and BOOM! broke wire, solderd it up and everything works.
I could only imagine how much Toyota would of charged to find this problem.
Whats weird is it looked like it was cut.
Thanks again

Same issues - where are these wires located?

Hello fellow runner fans. I'm very excited to find this thread as I'm having the exact same issues you stated and fixed nieuwendyk-25 on my 2000 4 Runner. I want to follow what you did but I don't know where to look for these wires you mentioned when you said " the rubber cover off the wire loom where it comes out of the top of the hatch opening ".

Where is this rubber cover and wire loom around the tailgate? Beneath the main tailgate door panels?

I understand this is a bit of a thread necro but seems like a friendly bunch around here hoping to see a reply. I hope you don't mind but I will try to PM you as well N25. Much thanks in advance.

No, it's at the top of the liftgate going to the top of the body by the liftgate hinges. It's the connection between the liftgate and the truck. The wires flex every time it opens and eventually the copper breaks or the insulation flakes of and weird stuff happens.

Thank you for your prompt and informative reply The Durk. Glad I jumped in and became legit I've been lurking these forums for awhile. I will report back with my findings and hopefully "fixed" post in the next week or two may be that long before I can really tear into things. Again, very much appreciated!
