I have 92 4runner and just had the rear regulator replaced. The guy at the body shop said to keep the gears clean of gunk. But never said how or what to use to clean it and the relube it if need be..I was wondering if any of you had experince with this?

Do you have a grease gun? That what I use and it seems to work.

 

you can always pick up a can of white lithium grease, i comes in a spray can with the little extension straw like wd-40.

What does the rear window regulator do? and what were the signs that indicated it needed to be replaced?

 

The regulator acts as an elevator for the window to ride on. Its like a pair of scissors in the effect of how it operates. A bad one in some peoples opinions is a broken one that is cracked or tweaked but if you have the right tools you can fix it up. I think they mainly go bad when they lack lube and stop working due to the pressure and bend or break.

 

Just use white grease (not lithium grease) or multi purpose grease. Grease up the teeth on the regulator and the window tracks (just the bottom one). I used the white lithium grease and its a pain to clean when you finally realize that you have to fix or replace a part in there.

 

Are there any write-ups on taking the tailgate apart, what/where to lube etc?
I always learn more by pictures than words so I hope there is a write-up.

I just pop the carpet board off and use an oil can. This seems to be the cleanest way to go about it. I lube the gears, the conector arms, and anything else that moves.
