Rear Window

Rear Window
I love my that my window rolls down in the back. I was driving down the road the other day and noticed a 4runner is the only car that has the sliding back window. I wonder why no other cars have this capability, maybe toyota patented it.

For some reason I think that there were some years of Isuzu Rodeos or maybe Nissan Pathfinders that also had a back window that went down. I think the reason they stopped making SUVs with that feature is both the exhaust fume issue and all the problems that tend to come with rear windows getting stuck down.
Personally I love it on my Runner. I love having a tailgate... it's great for hanging out before concerts and football games and it makes carrying long items easier.
The exhaust thing doesn't bother me cause I usually either ride with all the windows up or all of them down. I haven't had any problems with the electric motor in the window either, thanks to Toyota's lovely job with keeping it sealed. Those Broncos have nothing but trouble with the rear windows!

this is honestly my favorite feature. its so cool. i amaze newcomers all the time with 'turn around... no, really.. turn around'.
they always seem to feign amazement but i can tell they really are impressed!

Yes, how sweet it is!!!
I like the whole back hatch, which really comes in handy during a pouring rain, when I'm leaving a store/mall, I can pull a shopping cart entirely underneath to unload it, taking my time, and not get drinched. Not a drop gets inside the vehicle, nice! Maybe I'm just used to the topper rear hatch on my former pickup, which funneled water inside when I opened it in the rain.

One night I scared myself so bad rolling down the window. I just had the back window down, all the other ones were rolled up. I cut off the music too so it was so quiet. Its a quiet road and some car passed me going the other way, and it was quiet, until they got to the back of my car. Then I could hear the engine and it was so loud. Scared the crap out of me. Kinda hard to explain, but try it.

80's GM and Ford station wagons had a power rear window. Along with gates that opened 2 ways, down (with window down)or swing-out (window up or down). I think that new Envoy power-roof thing has that too.
My parents used to have a Chevy Caprice and I had a winter beater Mercury Colony Park like that. It was a fumes thing, evidently there were some deaths of people sitting in the back jump seat. Or at least that's what my mom always said. Made sense to me, fumes can come in badly if no other windows are open.
They rattled a lot too...
I actually prefered the simple swing-up window on my Explorer. It's just not very convienient to get the power window back up.

It's nice
I like the roll down window, but I'd rather that we have a clam-shell style split rear door like the Land Cruiser. That way when I reach in to get things from the back, my pants won't rub against the dirty bumper.

Holding down the remote key, waiting for it to go down, and sticking the key in to go back up (or starting the truck and holding the button down) is more inconvienent than using the hatch.
OK maybe it sounds like I'm whining, but I do just prefer a simple 2-piece hatch. The power window is nothing more than a gizmo IMO, one that went out on a buddy's 92 runner and was not cheap to fix. Maybe when warmer weather is here I'll change my mind.
Not a big deal though.

The rear window of my '73 Mercury rolled down. For that matter, a '63 Mercury sedan had a power rear window. Just about every big station wagon from the 60's & 70's had a power rear window. It's nothing new.

i think his point was that MODERN rivals to the 4runner (class competition) do not feature this option and it is unique and cool.
no need to start listing 70s, 80s and 90s boatwagons! :pat:
