Rear Moon Roof
Well, while sitting in the back of my 4Runner lastnight with a group a friends at a bonfire I had a crazy thought about how nice it would be if I could lay down and look at the sky. I know it wouldn't serve a real big purpose and it might not even be worth the time but has anyone ever attempted seen or thought about putting a nice size moon roof in the back of a 4Runner? Would be pretty cool to see. I know some of you guys are all about choppin your vehicles up and I personally wouldnt do it to my DD but thought this would be a nice little project. Any comments?

Aftermarket sun/moon roofs are a total nightmare. My 4Runner was mutilated and had aftermarket sunroof installed by the dealer. When I bought It I didn't realize it till I had to bring it because it was leaking like a sieve.
Stay away from making any(more) holes in a vehicles roof because its not if it will leak its just when.
To fix my aftermarket sunroof I had to get weatherstrip adhesive and glue it shut to stop the leaking.

Well if you just want a piece of glass type roof then, you might be okay if done by a good shop. Just keep an eye on it if you do allot of off roading. The twisting of the body and chassis can break the sealant loose if the shop didn't use the expensive stuff.

Are there any structural braces in the roof back there? That could be all kinds of problems for install, safety, body twist as stated could break the glass at some point, issues with the roof rack, etc. Sounds like a nightmare, even though it is a cool concept. I know some of the newer cars have a glass roof that is just as stable if not more structurally sound as steel, but that's a lot of R&D and factory installed so I don't know if I'd trust a home brew attempt.

My eventual plan is to make my 3rd gen a soft top. The plan is to make a cut right above the windshield and remove the whole section above your head, add an internal roll cage with a soft top over that that covers the 2 seating rows and comes down behind the rear seat leaving the trunk are open like a truck bed.

I think having a big peice of custom glass at the back would hold me back, id always be paranoid about getting body twist or smacking it on a low branch cuz something like that is probably expensive? and a pain to change. Cool Idea though

I had thought about a safari roof. It would be most of the roof. You would cut a big square out, add a lip up, and it would get a soft top cover that would snap/Velcro onto the lip. Then you could take the cover off and most of the roof would be open. They do it for safaris so you can stand up and take pictures and still be in the vehicle.
Edit: google ragtop sunroof. That would be awesome.

it would be cool to have a full length rag top....is that the Mini Cooper that comes like that? or the PT? I'm not sure, maybe it's a Liberty? There's a vehicle out there that comes with that as an option and I've thought about it many-a-times
It would be cool to see this happen from start to finish, make sure to post build threads with all the steps!!
