Rear End Noise?
I see many posts about rear diff noises but none sound like mine so I will ask here.
I have had a noise for a while that sounds like a front wheel bearing. A growling/grinding noise that starts about 15/20 mph. I purchased a front bearing (about $75) but when I tried to find out witch side it was with a stethoscope I could not find the noise. It really sounded like a wheel bearing. Now maybe seems like it's coming from the trans area when driving.
After that I put the rear end on stands and it sounds like it's coming from the rear end when I'm outside the truck. More from the right side than the left with the stethoscope. It's not a whining noise, like I said it's a growling/grinding/grumbling noise. If I pull the axle will I be able to tell, maybe feel roughness in the bearing? Anyone have this kind of noise?
At 40 MPH in neutral or in gear it sounds the same so I don't think it's the trans again. It's been very smooth since the rebuild. Trans and diff are clean & full with no signs of metal or gray looking oil.
1997 4runner 2wd, 2.7 4 cyl. 145,000 miles 5sp manual. Trans had noise in some gears, less in high gear. Had trans rebuilt 6 months ago, had bad bearings. U-joints had some play, replaced today (cups rusted to yokes, what a job).

That's the plan. It's just weird, when your driving it sounds like it's coming from up front somewhere but with the stethoscope I can hear it at the rear of the trans and in the axle bearings, but mostly RR axle. That's were I'm going to start.

I've been checking around about parts & labor. So far the best price on the bearing, OE type is about $49.00. Seals $6.50 each. The problem I found is not many places will press it and the local auto parts wants $30.00 per bearing and I have to buy the bearing from them at $78.00. The other is a regular machine shop I trust but they want $75.00 labor per bearing. Ouch! He said there a bitch to do because it's hard to find a way to get it apart.

there not that hard to replace, you just have to have the proper tools.
i cant say on the price as i have never paid to have them done!

Hate to say it, Dirkk, but that sure sounds like the death rattle I got from my slushbox when the planetary failed. Sure, you're a five-speed guy, but are you confident the rebuild went according to plan?
