Correct, do NOT get the stock bumper. Even if you get rear-ended, you could get severe body damage because the stock rear bumper actually mounts to the 4Runner bed. I have no idea how a design that bad could've been implemented on a Toyota, but replacing the stock bumper to a frame-mounted bumper would be my very first mod!

Looks like these guys have them:

You might try a wrecking yard. The trick is getting all 5 pieces. (Bumper, 2 end caps, 2 side trims.)

i have a 3" bl so the rear bumper lines up with the frame almost perfect. bumper tubing wraps around and fits into the stock square cutouts in the brushwackers, stickers read 'mud makes me horny'...

I've got side trims left over from my change out if you decide to go that route.

I yanked a step bumper off of an older taco. It will do untill I can afford a custom made one. Looks good, looks stock, and its tougher than the POS that it came with.

Talking the step style are stout

I have a chrome step style that came from an 84 2wd. I don’t know if it was stock or not but I have seen a few around town. It is now on my 82 4x4 and it is really tough. I finally bent it slamming into a tree stump backing up at a good speed. It hurt a lot when I stopped. I was stuck in a mud hole for two days up to the bottom of the doors with 33” tires 6-7” of lift (I was way stuck). It took everything a 404 mog with lockers and 40”tires could do to yank me out. Backwards was the only way it was guna happen so we yanked on the bumper with a 30’ 1.5” rope with all the mogs might. Just trust me those little bumpers are tough.
