Rear Axle Bearing Install Check

I just got the rear axle shafts back from the shop since I didn't have a press. They installed new outer seal, bearing, spacer, snap ring, ABS wheel, & inside spacer. That is in order from outside of axle to inside.

I noticed the ABS wheels is not at the same height between the two with the axle standing straight up with wheel studs on ground. I am going to measure to the center of the sensor and see if they are close enough.

Also with the axle standing up with wheel studs on ground there is small amount of play side to side if I hold the axle shaft with one hand and the backing plate where the bearing is pressed into. This ok?

I would go back and ask the guy but he up the price $40 when I picked them up from what he quote me when I left them off and also a day later then he promised. When I showed him the written quote he gave me he started yelling at me and told me to pay it all. I will not be going back there.

I though the reason I started wrenching myself was to not have to deal with these pricks.

Just need some advice to reassure me the job was done right. Thanks

Yes. I confirmed this with a 20-year veteran technician (retired) and the Toyota Service Manager the other day (he called his foreman and asked). I had the same concerns when I pulled my axles to do the inner seals.

Check the play once it is bolted back in place and the wheel is on. With the vehicle in the air, move the rear wheel side to side and top to bottom. There should be no play.

I would be concerned about the difference you mentioned in the ABS wheel location between one side and the other too, but I do not know for certain if that is bad thing (I don't see why Toyota would put unequal length axle shafts in though). Sounds fishy to me...

OK, if you have the ABS reluctor wheel, a very common mistake is the reluctor wheel and second retainer coller is pressed on too far, collar wont seal in the axle tube seal, gear oil all over your rear brakes. When its all together, it should go "bearing, retainer and snap ring" and then you will have about 1/4 to 3/8" inch gap, then the reluctor wheel with another retainer pressed up flush. As for the backing plate movement, normal. You should see an air gap under your reluctor wheel! I bet its done wrong.

I'd ask what reason he upped the price? Could it be for the price of a new reluctor wheel? Because we are unable to remove these with even the special Toyota tool. We need to cut off the first collar and cut iff the reluctor wheel, just to get to the snap ring. Then we can press the rest off. I assume he charged you for the extra retainer and reluctor wheel.

I just picked up my truck from the dealership - the rear diff seals were getting replaced (with the bearing and everything else). The labour is 4.5 hours, even considering the pretty expensive rates - it's not too bad considering it's likely to be done right, with warranty and nobody is going to yell at you. More over, it's likely that you won't have to yell at anybody either.

I supplied them with all the parts I bought at the toyota dealership. He said the quote was a mistake from before.

They installed the bearing-retaining ring-ABS wheel-reataining ring. The left out the clip after the first retaining ring and then left no grap between where the clip should be and the ABS wheel. So you are right about putting it in like it is and it not even sealing on the inner axle seal.

I am going to try and get my money back or have them fix it.

Thanks guys for all the help.

I measured that the inside retaining ring should be 6mm to where it get dull on the axle shaft. That should centering the oil seal on the retaining ring.

A little trick I've seen used and works fine is to just press on a second collar at the end (for a total of 3 collars now) and this will get the seal surface about midway. The reluctor wheel wil be in further, but has no affect ont he ABS sensor, still works OK, but not right. But liek I said, it does work. Just one more colalr you have to cut off next time. And a heads u0p for anyone doing these, plan on buying a collar and reluctor wheel. Get them before you take it apart for a weekend repair.

Anyone got a correct factory measurement from a manual for the spacing between the clip and ABS wheel. I will go with 1/4"-3/8" like you said above . I want to double check what I measured.

I see what you mean about putting 2 retaining rings on the inside but if the seal ended up between the two it would leak.

I will take a picture tonight and post it up.

Yes, there is a spec. I checked the repair manual just today. There was a measurement fromt he face of the axle flange (area where the drum sets on) to the top of the last collar. It was 4.81 inches. Make sure the collars have the rounded over edge pointing inward. This is so it doesnt take out the seal as you slide the axle into the tube. If you need the exact info from the repair manual, PM me with your email address. You will need Adobe Acrobat reader.
