random 3rd gen 4runner badges
This is a bit trivial, but what is the deal with the random badges I see on the back of 3rd Gen 4runners? It's like the dealer gets a box of badge stickers and just puts them on anywhere. My 4runner, for example, has "4runner" in the middle above the license plate below the rear wiper. It says "SR5" on the lower left on the gate and "Toyota" on the lower right on the gate. The Toyota emblem is just above "4runner" and that's it.
I see all kinds of random ลลลล though..."4WD", "4runner" on the upper left on the gate, "V6", etc. just stuck anywhere and everywhere. There doesn't seem to be a standard. This seems to be the case on 3rd gen only between the years 98-02. This isn't much of a topic, but I though someone might know just for my trivial knowledge...

I have the same setup you have. Ive seen several base 4runners with just 2 "4runner" badges on the back. I think every group of years has its own style.

I agree, the badging looks random and excessive. My 2000 said "4Runner" on the left, had the "T" badge in the middle by the wiper, said "SR5 4WD" on the right and to top it all off, it read "toyota" on the bottom right. If you read it from top to bottom and left to right "4Runner Toyota SR5 4WD Toyota." I removed some of it--the random toyota on the bottom and the sr5 on the right; looks much cleaner.

yeah, I think I have the same set-up as Paddlenbike. But every time I see one on the road it does look like someone just through them on there. Swap em all out for a Hilux Surf Badge, still havent put mine on yet, but that should look dope.

this may be a dumb question, but i've been thinking of removing some of the badging from the rear of my runner now that i have the old school FJ satoshi badge in the front. how hard is it to remove the badges on the lift gate? is there any penetration in the body to hold them on that i will have to cover/ paint after i remove them?

easy as pie.
you dont have the 4runner logo that was punched into the lic. plate frame, so youre set.
just heat it up really good with a hairdryer (or heat gun) and slide dental floss behind the badges... theyll come right off. there may be some residue, but you can buff it off or wait for it to come off on its own.

Yeah, they are like stickers...with a double stick tape type stuff for backing. With as many random styles that I've seen, it really seems like something that was left up to the dealer---or maybe some dude in Japan at the end of the assembly line, then the next guy would come onto shift and put them wherever he wanted, and so on...
I wish I could post pics...I don't know how to imbed them on here. But if you want to check out a few follow this link-

I will post more pics soon of the new wheels and tires installed.

I like the badge locations of the later 3rd gens and I'm thinking of altogether removing the lower "TOYOTA" piece but I think it might have posts to deal with while all the other lettering is just stuck on.
