QUIET 2.5 inch muffler. Anyone know where?

I have the Downey 2.5 inch exhaust for my 87 Runner. At first the loud noise was new and cool, and now, well, it sounds like some stupid tuner, and the noise in the cab at highway speeds is unbelievable. I want to keep the big exhaust, but i want it to sound more stock. Google's given me nothing. Everything is LOUD. I want QUIET. I'm trying to avoid going to muffler shops, but it's looking like i'll have to, unless someone knows of a site. Thanks.

Try the Dynomax Ultra flow. Here is a link http://www.dynomax.com/sounds.stm

Or go with a Cherry Bomb

I have a Downey system also and it can be real annoying at times (annoying enough to fab a 2" tip to cut down the weed wacker on crack sound)

I had a cherry bomb for a few years and it was way softer than the downey muffler; hell I'm thinking about going back to the cherry bomb but I got a free Ultra Flo 2 1/2" in and duel 2" outs and I am tempted to see how that sounds compared to the Downey setup. IMO I have heard a couple 'Yotas with the Flowmasters and I think they sound like ˟˟˟˟˟. I would rather have a turbo two thay are close to OEM and still have the flow.

I have a 2.25" but I went with the longest MagnaFlow they make. I think the body was 18" or so. Nice low mellow sound, not to loud, not too quiet.

Just get a turbo muffler from Summit. I think they are about $18. They are designed for a V8 so your engine won't be pushing nearly as much exhaust through it. Or you could get a stock V6 muffler since it will have more capacity than you need.
Or, if you get a Cherry Bomb glass pack it will work as a resonator to quiet out annoying frequencies if you use it in conjunction with the Downey muffler. Two small mufflers are better than one big one.

I've got the flowmaster 50 deltaflow that I like. It's got a little rumble, but not loud all the time. If you want completely quiet then check out the flowmaster 60.....

I would say either a Dynomax "Super turbo" or the flowmaster "50 series". My ultra flo is probably just as loud as your downey muffler. You could also consider adding an additional muffler like the "Purple hornie" or any other heavily louvered glass pack. I added a Heavily louvered glass pack to my flowmaster 40 series and it cut the noise level in half. Im considering adding one to my Dynomax as well.

Short glasspacks are loud. Long glasspacks have a nice rumble to them. I used to put long glasspacks on all our cars (from a '31 Pontiac to a '66 Mustang). They are less restrictive than a stock system, but the louvers intrude into the exhaust flow and modern mufflers have them beat now. But, I still think glasspacks have a better tone.

borla

My borla is a small free flowing muffler that isnt loud at all, a nice low rumble at idle and low tone that you cannot hear at high way speeds at all.. I will buy one again.

mufflers

i put an on steroids muffler on my RAV4 but took the stock muffler for my 88 4runner and it is better than the stock unit it had before but i beleive its bigger than the 4runner took, my muffler guy had to make it fit a trim here & there but its in. no noise at all.

Thay are actually but thay are still quieter then a straight pipe. Knowing that a glass pack does do a fair amount of quieting you can assume that adding a glass pack into an existing exhaust system as a second muffler will significantly reduce noise. I dont run the glass pack alone but in conjunction with a regular muffler to act as a resonator.

i agree, a big long glasspack is pretty quiet and has a nice tone. i think on a 4 banger you need some backpressure to have any hopes of retaining your torque.

and i also hate flowmasters. your exhaust should sound like your engine, not a flowmaster. chevy, ford, toyota, etc all sound the same with a flowmaster -- like crap

Well, these "performance Mufflers" sound good on a big, powerful V-8, but on a 22re? It's not working for me. I like the idea of a 2n'd muffler. the engine seems to have a few extra squirrels with the bigger pipe, so i'd like to keep it, and the glasspack sounds like it might be a plan. Anyway, thanks for the advice
