Question on squeaks - 3rd Gen 4runner
I ask every once in awhile...
Anyone have a squeak on the passenger side near the airbag? More importantly, anyone find a cause? It is driving me nuts...
Also anyone have any write-up on removing a 3rd gen dash?

I've got a squeek coming from that area, and best I can tell at the moment it's the door rubbing up against the side of the dash.
The clips on the inside part of the door are not strong enough to stay clipped when you shut the door, so the paneling of the door pops off and rubs up against the dash.
It makes more noise it seems on days where the temp fluctuates a lot.

Mine also makes more noise when the temp fluctuates, and more overall when it is warm out. But it is not the door rubbing, I have had a flashlight looking at the crack and it is no where near it, (I do agree my door panels do not stay in toward the front, but do not pop out enough to touch the dash)

Well I've got another noise on the left hand side of the airbag, but it's pretty intermittent, and it only really happens when it's cold outside.
Drives me crazy though.
The best way to find the noises is to clean everything out of your car so that you can be sure that it's not any of your crap moving around, and have someone else drive around while you look/listen for the noise. A stethoscope is good too.

I had a rattle/squeek on that side once. It drove me INSANE. Turns out that it wasn't actually inside the vehcle, and it was the power antenna nut. CRAZY. Also, my glove box was a little bit loose once, and the latch squeeked.

I found my squeak. It was coming from the airbag, where the airbag cover touches the dash board, on the right side and the top right corner, where there is a lip to the dash. The noise is not totally gone, but it is alot quieter. I am soo happy....

I may have done a bad bad thing to myself, but some WD-40 in the cracks, on all sides between the air bag cover and the dash , and it cleared it up (Obviously I did not dump the whole can in, and I was careful with overspray)
I have no idea what this will mean if the airbag is ever used...
It makes a bit of noise, but not nearly as much, about 10% of what it did before.

I had a couple squeeks that sounded like they were coming from the bottom of the vehicle. One turned out to be a couple loose bolts on the bumper which I noticed when removing it to install my new T-15. Now that that's fixed, I'm hearing another one. I think this time it's one of the skid plates rubbing on something.

My dad's 96 has a rattle from behind the pass airbag that is driving me crazy. Its not the antenna because I replaced it with the Taco whip antenna and it is still making the sound. It drives me crazy when I ride in it!

I am soo happy with my truck now... Now the upgrades will continue.

How do you get to the airbag through the center console?

Well your problem sounds internal, if you remove the center panel, the one where the radio sits, you will have enough space to get a hand back there, and look around with a flashlight, that is what I meant. It is hard and a pain, but If you can feel something loose then you may have a winner...
