Question about CV joints
doing an oil change this morning, I discovered a lot of nasty thick grease all over the frame behind the drivers' side wheel, and in looking, my fears of a ruptured CV boot were confirmed, and the problem is, i have no idea how long its been ruptured because i havent really looked under there since the last oil change about 2 mos ago. So i guess my question is... am i really screwed as far as the axleshaft and CV joint go since this boot has been open, and secondly, if i do have to replace these, does anyone know about how much parts will cost?. Thanks for any info you guys might have

The same thing happened to me a couple weeks ago, I did end up needing to replace the CV axleshaft. I don't know if I got a good deal on the price or not (doubtful judging by how everything else here is priced). I think it cost me around $100 for the axleshaft and the boot, plus labor if you have someone else install it of course.
btw, I got them at Sears Auto Center, seemed to be the cheapest around here.

Brian - Thanks for the info.
I guess another question to add is what about the actual CV joint itself? is that part of the axleshaft? Or if not, was it in good enough shape that it didn't need to be replaced?

Mine was in good enough shape that all I had to replace was the axleshaft, and the inner and outer boot of course. I'll check back to this later, lol posting this from a school computer.

Man, just can't seem to get away from this. Lol anyway, happy to have been able to help. If you have it done it'll probably run a total of around $280-300 though because the labor was not cheap, Sears seemed to have the lowest price on labor as well. I guess I'm lucky I'm still in high school (1 year left) but money like that is hard to come by for me lol.

Monkey,
Though not a 4runner, I recently went to the dealership to see if our Camry's CV joint "system" needed to be replaced. They quoted $265 - $290 to replace the inner/outer boot, grease and repack.
