question about buying a 85 4x4

question about buying a 85 4x4

k my friends brother has a '85 4x4 and im sure you all know thats an awsome year. only problem is that it burns oil and will probably need a rebuild soon as its got over 200k on the odometer. currently im driving a very reliable 93 2wd with a good ass posi and 4.11s and BFG Ats.

the 85 has BFG Ats, new 4" lift, 6 pt roll cage, lots of new parts like berfield or whatever its called, new clutch master cylinder etc. anyways my friend is a good mechanic and i know he knows what hes doin but his brother is kinda a tool about automobiles. but anyways he said he'd sell it to me for 2500 bucks. i almost shat my pants cause that seemed low for one of those but i guess the motor isnt in the best of shape. anyways...what would you all do?

i would like to just convert my 93 to 4wd with a straight axle but i dont have the money to spend. i could sell my 93 for like 4k cause its in immaculate shape and runs tits, and buy the 85 and rebuild the motor if i have to. should i try and get him to drop the price? or should i just look for something else?

any help is much appreciated.

Are you looking for a daily driver or a wheeler? Personally, if you are confident you can get 4K for the '93 (which frankly I'm unsure about) then get your 4K. Take 2500 and buy your buddy's truck and then take the remaining 1500 and get yourself a little car, like a Geo Prism or equivalent. That way you have something to drive while you rebuild the motor on the '85. Also, see if 2500 is negotiable. Doesn't hurt to ask. By the way, how are your wrenching skills?

im looking for something i can wheel pretty good but drive to work everyday. so i will probably leave it at the height its at but get some MTRs or something like that. my wrenching skills arnt bad but my friends are much better. he does metal fabrication and is in the electricians union. basically if i ever need help i have someone that knows what their doing if i cant do it. he just finished installing this new long arm rubicon express kit on his jeep. thing doesnt even come with complete directions its so new but he figured it out no prob. hes built quite a few wheelers and i definetly trust his wrenching skills.

oil leaks are hard to track down but it doesnt meani it needs a rebuild i say get it and work on it....

well he said it burns oil, like when you gun it getting on the freeway you can see a little blue smoke. that coupleled with the fact that its got like 200k on the odometer prob means its just burning oil during combustion. so rings....basically a rebuild soon. i was mainly wondering what you guys think i should pay for somethin like this. keep in mind all the stuff its already got i guess.

get someone to check it out. thats your best bet. that way you know what youre getting into.

id offer 2K and use the extra 500 toward making it run right.

what would you guys recommend for the motor if i was to rebuild it? i mean is there parts you would recommend such as a certain cam for low-midrange etc.? my friend is a really good mechanic (his brother is the doh-tard that says it needs a new motor) so i trust him when he tells me its a solid truck. but i will go through it with him and check things out. find out exactly whats wrong with it.

is it carbureted(22R) or fuel injected(22R-E)?

either way, put an engnbldr 261C cam in there, that should make a lot of difference for low-end torque. if its carbed, look into having it rebuilt, as it's likely 20 years old and has leaky diaphragms and other problems.
