Question about black rims

I really like the look of the black rims I see on many of the Runners on this list. My question is this.

Did you guys paint your stock rims or buy new rims? I'd like to get a se for my 99.

Thanks,
Tencast--

I'm not sure which ones you've seen, but there are a couple of sets of black steel rockcrawler rims that are pretty popular in these parts. They are dirt cheap too, usually around $50ea. for a 15x8 wheel.

Check out this link for more info

Here's a pic...

I like black rims too. I actually looked into powdercoating my stock rims, but scratched that idea when I found out it would cost $275 with no warranty.

Fake beadlock's or A.Racing are the way to go.

Slim pickings for 17x8 in black or black beadlocks. Nobody seems to have this size and color.

Yeah $245 is pretty steep. I think I'll go with the $50 ones from American Racing. I do like the looks of that 4 runner though.

Balck Rims

I recently put American Racing AR767's on. They were like $30 a piece. I really like how they drive and how they look !

Those AR767 are not 17x8, only 16&15 inch wheels are made in that model.

Just to throw my 0.02's in, another issue is trying to fit 15 inch rims on a 3rd gen that came with 16 inch rims. Apparently, the brake caliphers are a bit larger on the 4runner than the Tacoma, and I don't know of anyone that has found a 15 inch rim to fit on a 16 inch 4runner. And before anyone suggests WheelerOffroad, Gary Wheeler has stated that his 15 inch rims WILL NOT fit on a 3rd gen. 4runner.

Wierd, I swear I have seen 3rd gen Runners with 15's (those ugly steel ones). No offense to anyone who has them.

Hey Ryan,

What's the backspacing on those rims?

If the 4Runner was originally equipped with 15's, then its not an issue, its just for 4runners that came with 16 inch rims- they don't appear to be "backwards" compatible. A couple of us are trying to get this all figured out, but thats what the story seems to be. SMRrunner took 15 inch stock rims off a 4runner and could not fit them on his 4runner (that had 16 inch rims).

Since this is a recurring question:
Here are the ones that I have. Yes those are actual grade 8 bolts with nylon locknuts on the inside of the "ring" and they were $55 each at Discount Tire (15x8) They have a welded on reinforcement ring that makes the outer lip stronger than the inner lip or the outer lip on those regular black rock crawlers. And for the small price difference I think that they are worth it. At least there are few of you guys out there who are willing to go with these. It makes my ride that much more unique.

This might be a dumb question, but I was wondering what the purpose of bead-locks are.

Where can I find out some more info on those trucks? Like, what they are outfitted with, and some more pics?

They hold the tire on the rim while it's deflated to a lower psi (while wheeling) so that it doesn't pop off.
