I've been thinking about swapping my 15" stock rims with some 16" rims off of a '96 Runner and I was wondering how much this will effect my spedo. I've heard of some others doing this. Anybody whose done this have any opinions about this swap?

You can always readjust tire size to the same diameter as the smaller rim size + tire.

Otherwise try a search on tire calculator and you can find out what difference several tire sizes will make.

I didn't switch rim sizes but I did end up going up in tire size to about an additional inch.

My speedo is off by 6 or so when I'm at 65 MPH.

I could be wrong here but I don't think rim size is going to matter much - it's the end total rim+tire diameter that makes the difference.

 

Right, but if I go with the same size tire (31"x10.5") I'm going to be about an inch taller. I guess a lot of people move up to 32's with no problem so I guess I should be alright.

 

Yeah, I went up an inch and it hasn't been a problem.
Really, try a search for tire calculators and it'll allow you to input 2 different sizes and what the speedo difference will be.

Like others have said rim size doesn't matter; its the tire size. The tires on my Runner are 31x10.5x15. My wife has 275/70/16 or whatever the stock 16" tire size is. Our tires are esentially the exact same outside diameter. So it should be fine to switch. Just get the same size outside diameter for the 16" rims when compared to the 15" rims. I checked our sizes by using the BFG website. We both have BFG AT KO's. The outside diameter for both our tire sizes match on the size chart. This way we can use the same size snow chains or put both sets on one car

See the reason I am asking is becasue my sister is selling her '96 Lmt Runner and I am going to switch the tires and rims from her Runner before she sells it because she has brand new tires and I need new tires so I figure if she's going to be trading it in theres's no sense in giving the dealer brand new tires. I see what you are doing now, but it may not work. The 16" rims will fit the 15" truck but the 15" rims may not fit the 16" Runner. The brakes/rotors may be larger on the Runner. Depending on the rims it may or may not work. You'll just have to try. I think I remember some Tacoma guys (with stock 16" rims) grinding the edges of their calipers to fit 15" wheels.

 

Hmmm? I hadn't thought about that. I will probably just take off one tire on each vehicle and see what I can do.

 

I tried 15 inch rims from a 98 Tacoma on my 02 Tacoma that came with 16... no problems there.

I doubt you'll have any problems.
