purchasing scoop hood
I'll be going home in a couple weeks and i think im gonna do the hood scoop mod.
I'll be purchasing the hood over there for $58 but I still need all the little accessories which ive gathered are the below.
There are two questions I have. 1) Do all of these parts have to be purchased at the dealer or can things like the screws and nuts be purchased at home depot/lowes?
2) Of the dealerships that you all know of, who's the cheapest to get all these parts from.
From posts I read earlier 1st toyota parts $110
toyotapartssales.com 79.15
Right now my cost would be $215
THANKS
screws (4) 90167-45005
nuts (4) 90179-06324
cushions (4) 90540-05028
rivets (2) 90269-04054
bulge 76181-35901
guide 76182-35020
protectors (4) 76183-12030
protectors (2) 76184-12020
protector 76185-35010
retainer 76187-35010
plate 76192-35010

You can likely find cheap replacements for the screws, nuts, bolts and rivets but I am not sure how much you'll be saving over the total cost of all the additional parts. Might be nice to post prices next to the part numbers when you check at the dealer and which place had the best price in the end.

nope. no paint from TOYOTA. some dealerships have their own paint & body shops or ones that they farm work out to. that's the only way you get a scoop or hood pre-painted.
you can skimp on the rivets and bolts, but it's about $300 for a factory hood, $110 for the molded scoop piece (bulge), $40 for the scoop insert and the screen (guide & plate). from there, you add about $10 for the rivets, bolts, nuts, washers, pads, etc - total. compare that to the $450 to get the other stuff + paint, and you aren't really saving anything...
oh, and $58 for a HOOD? oh really... do share if you can get them that cheap. if you can, then i'll just sell about 10 a day on ebay for $150 a pop and quit my day job.

turns out the 79.15 from toyotapartsale.com is just for the bulge.
The cheapest is 112.23 with shipping from Northridge Toyota
I cant believe the other parts are almost twice as much as the hood
I guess its not too bad, $250 total

FYI: I paid $300 for the hood alone and then another $155 for the rest of the parts and then I still had to paint it. However, that was at my local dealer and w/ only a 10% "regular customer" discount off full blown list prices.

the hood can't go on wrong. The bottom bolts on the hinge (Closest to the windshield) don't have any adjustment at all, the bolt is tapered, and thats how it goes on. Also, I got the hood and bulge, and "all the screws/rivets etc." and didn't end up using any except for the ones that attached the bulge to th hood. (4(6?) 10mm nuts). Now, this might sound ghetto, but I took 2 screws and 2 washers, and put them through the black backing piece, then through the mesh, and epoxy'd the screws to that mesh/protector piece. Then, I painted the epoky black so it didn't show chrome screws. Then, I got 2 more washers, 2 lock washers, and 2 nuts, and attached the protector to the bulge that way. It was much easier than finding a rivet gun, and I couldn't figure out how to get the excess rivet out of the mesh part. Anyways, it cost about $1 in nuts/bolts/washers, and it's been runnin on there in the Colorado roads for about 8 months with no problems....if it doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll take a few pics.

My friend got a aftermaket base hood with the scoop from www.partstrain.com for $160 + shipping and it looks and feels like a quality part but I just checked their site and all they have are the plain hoods.
He still had to get the other stuff from Toyota of course but he a paint guy with a booth in his garage so the paint was nearly free. He's a good friend to have around to mooch cheap paint work.
