Pros/cons of E rated tires on a 3rd gen?
I am looking to get some General Grabbers AT2 s mounted this week, or the Firestone Destination ATs.
Grabbers are E rated and Dest are C rated.
With the weight of the 3rd Gen being around 2.5 tons, what would an advantage / disadvantage of E vs C rated tires be?
Should a 3rd gen 4runner even have E rated tires on it due to the stiff side wall?

Not totally sure what you are trying to do here but check out this site as it xplains how to read your tire ratings for the load and speed ratings you intend to encounter with the tires you are looking at. Ultimately you decide what goes on your vehicle, but I would not get a tire that would be unsafe either load or speed. good luck

I ran Es for 4K miles (Dunlop Max Tractions) and had to take them off because they rode absolutely terrible. I swear sometimes it felt like I had no suspension at all. I got some Ds (Maxxis Bighorns) and sold the Es and my ride is 100xs better! I'll never get Es on a mid-sized truck again.

I have been wondering the same thing about the "E" load rated tires. I was planning to get the new Falken Wild Peak AT's in 265/75/16. I have been told by a couple of different tire shops that the ride would be harsh, but they would hold up better to off roading.. any other thoughts on the 10 ply "E" tires?

My suspension is pretty stiff in the back now, Im sure it would get worse with those grabbers.

I've got 265-70-15 Load E apparently (never really paid attention to it and the site I ordered it from didn't specify). I absolutely love the tires, granted they are definitely loud for an AT tire but not so much compared to MTs. I'm very impressed by the tires and it would take a lot to convince me to buy any other alternate brand AT tire. I've had BFG ATs and they absolutely sucked on wet pavement. These tires I still cannot break them loose. As far as ride quality I have not noticed any difference other than noise. The noise from the tires sounds like either a very bad wheel bearing or even rear end noise. It keeps me paranoid so I often put it on the lift at work just to check everything over and be sure it's still the tires.

I have E-rated 235/85 Hankook MT's...they are STIFF! You can feel most cracks in the freeway. Ride great when aired down offroad though . I'll be going back to 285/75 D-rated nittos next.

I've run 3 different sets of E rated tires on 3rd gens. It just happens that they only make 255/85R16 tires in E though. I like how stiff the sidewalls are, it makes for some fun cornering.

I had E rated 285/75 BFG AT's on my 96. I didn't think it rode stiff at all....but then again, I was coming from a lowered sports car riding on 40 series tires. I myself would have no problem buying an E rated tire for my 4runner.

it will ride stiff, it will also last longer and wear better. they will also most likely be stupid reliable.. kinda like using rocket launcher to kill a deer.. its overkill, but I like overkill..

those are 2 tire makes I am considering as well. I have D rated Nittos now and they also feel stiff but for the occasional rock crawling I do- I think a stiff sidewall is a wise thing.
If I wanted soft and cushy I would go back to P rated tires like the Runner had when I got it, but soft or stiff the potholes near my house just eat up a tire.
Whatever you get be sure it comes with a replacement warranty. I had a nail too close to the sidewall to repair and Discount replaced entire tire at about 1 year of life with a brand new one at absolutely no cost to me.

Nobody really mentioned what psi they were running in their tires. When I had the local tire shop put on my new Cooper Discoverer's (235/85 16's load range "E") they had them at 85 psi IIRC and of course it rode like I had solid rubber tires on there. But after dropping them down to the proper 30 psi it rode much better, no difference than what the stock tires did.
Since i use my Coopers (studded 10 ply's) for the winter's here, it's reassuring to know that I have a very durable tire underneath the rig especially during some of the harsher trips I've had to make.

Man I am glad for the input! I went and looked at the tires today. The destinations only come in a/b rated or P265/75/16 and the grabbers look mean and nasty and all kinds of overkill!
Then I saw them... Cooper Zeon LTZs. Wow. They are like a hybrid MT/AT and very soft but with huge deep lugs! And these are E rated as well.
So now I am torn between the Cooper and the General. Price is the same, but I cant find any info on the Cooper Zeon LTZ as far as a decent review. A couple guys at the store said they are not really an AT or an MY, but more for soccer moms in Hummers.
Then I saw them... Cooper Zeon LTZs. Wow. They are like a hybrid MT/AT and very soft but with huge deep lugs! And these are E rated as well.

My 255/85 Bighorns are Ds and they are sick (and were not too hard on the wallet either). These ride so much better than my Dunlop Es. One way I can tell (besides not getting thrown around) is my door panels don't rattle constantly anymore, in fact they're virtually silent again.
Good point, I tried running my Es as low as 25 psi on the highway and I could still feel every crack. I have my Ds at 35 and they feel smooth.

Not sure about the other tires you are looking at but the General ATs are also snow rated. Can't say much about their performance as we don't get much of it.

A few months back, I got a set of E rated 285/75 16 Fierce Attitude M/T's. With ~5k miles on them, I've been very impressed with their ride and relatively low noise levels. Obviously, they don't ride like the stock P metric tires, but when aired properly, they don't do that badly. Here in Iowa, we see our share of snow and ice and these are the best tires I've ever had in the snow. Surprisingly, they do quite well on icy roads too. The Attitudes are definitely worth a look.
