Pro's/Con's of 33/10.5s

Page 14 of this month's Off Road Adventures shows a Tacoma with 33x10.50's going up some loose stuff so that should quell any theories that they don't work well in that situation. I realize he has a locker which is a big help also. I ran this size tire almost exclusively on the beach and they did really good. I never aired down below 25 psi.

I'm running 33x10.50 AT's, and I like them a lot, but I think I like the 33" part more than the 10.50 part.
Bigger tires have made a huge diference in my off-road ability, but when it comes to sand I kick myself for not getting 12.50's. With the rear locker I can go pretty much everywhere and not worry about getting stuck, but I have to air down a lot more with 10.50's to compensate for the lack of tread width.
Interestingly, I haven't seen any loss of mileage (in fact, I may have gained 1 or 2 on the highway) As it is, I only get 15 in the city and 18 on the freeway anyway, so I avoid the whole driving far in it business.
My next set of tires will probably be a 35x12.50 or there abouts, and I'm just going to lift my 4Runner as needed to make it work. I think they'll clear with a spacer in the back and ball joint spacers with HD torsion bars in the front, perhaps some minor cutting (added on to what I already have of course). I want 35's bad, so I'm determined to make them work.
But, to get 35's I'll need to re-gear to 5.29's and such... The list goes on and on.

I've been seriously condisering the idea of lifting the Runner and have decided for what I want to do I don't need a huge lift or huge tires. I'm going with the same setup that Flygtenstein has...1" Roger Brown BL and 33x12.50 Mudders and I'll be set for a while. After a while a regear and lockers and then go from there...I'm pretty stoked!

And here's the obligatory (poseur) pic:
Before anyone asks, yes I plan to deep six the Smitty stuff...
EDIT: I just kind of like this pic, so why not...

About the pic of the Taco. If that was the Alpine Loop near Ouray and we are thinking of the same magazine, my 12.5 inch tires went up that just fine too. Lockers are expensive, but they make wheeling possible.
33x12.5's are a "normal" tire. If you want them, there is a clear formula to them. I would go after the width.

What's the biggest tire I can fit without too much rubing on a 1st gen with a 1" body lift? The 30's that are on there look SO SMALL and are bald.... I really want the added diff clearance of either 33's or 35's but i don't have money to get a locker and new gears yet so I'm thinking about running 33x12.5's.

how hard is it to find 33x11.5's??? i think i might go that route, since i can't decide between the 12.5's and the 10.5's seeing how it is still very much a daily driver, and i go up to the mountains almost every weekend durring the winter to ski, but i also try to go up to the mountains every other week to do some wheeling durring the summer. so would 11.5's be a good compramise between the two?

I also just put 34x10.50's swamper ltb's on my 94 ext cab. had to crank the T-bars and do some cutting to the fender but they will fit for now(working on a sas soon)anyway I love 'em and they don't make all that much noise on the highway

I have a stock green 94 Rnr & I do little to no Off-roading I do however drive up the Mtns to go Snowboarding all the time and the rubber i have right now is ready to expire in about 6 mos. I am running 31 X 10.5's....thinking of switching to 32's X10'5 will there be much of a noticable difference???? how big can I go before i can expect rubbing with a 10'5???? is a 33 possible with a 10.5....or does the gas millage become insane>???? what about the speedometer will it gel with tires??

i don't think anybody makes a 32x10.5. most are 32x11.5, don't think a 32" tire would make that big of a difference to what you have now. 33x10.5 tires probably wouldn't cut into your gas milage much but might feel slightly slower and will set your speedometer off a bit. i think there's some kind of module downey sells to adjust the speedometer without changing your gears

My LTBs are holding up well. They are loud on the road but I'm not bothered by it. I just took them off and put my lil 31's back on cuz with school and a messed up cv boot I wasn't getting any off road action and I was sick of wasting such awesome off road rubber on the pavement.
The bigger tires set my speedo to read about 5mph slower than I was really going (I checked it with my GPS so I dont know how accurate that is). As for gas milage I didn't notice any significant change.

thanks! i've always heard mixed reports about ltbs online. i have a friend who ran them on his toyota(before he sold everything but the body and mounted it on a chevy frame :puke: ) and he loved them, said they were a great all-around tire. the price sure is right, anyhow

If anyone wants a comparison shot of 31x10.5 beside some 32x11.5, I can whip one up. I have my new 32's sitting here taking up space and can take a photo. It's not much of a difference in size.
