My rails are supposed to be ready to go on Monday (painted to match the truck) and I spent an hour polishing my aluminum cargo basket, so it looks like I'm just gonna put it back on. The MPG gains are offset by the ease of use by just leaving it up there.

You could also remove the trailer hitch to improve mileage. It probably weighs 50 pounds and a weight reduction is a good way to increase acceleration and mileage. I bet a lot of people never even use their trailer hitch. I admit that I keep mine because I parallel park and it acts like a second bumper.

I got the rails back tonight and man they turned out great!!! I went ahead and put my Thule rack back on there. I'm going to measure the mileage with it vs. without it and come up with some exact figures.
If it doesn't rain tomorrow, I'll wash it up and take some pics. The rails turned out great and the rack looks brand new after being hit with that Mother's Aluminum Polish.

I just completed a 350 mile trip with two 15' long sea kayaks on my roof and I still managed my usual 19 mpg. If those massive windsails on my roof don't make a measureable difference, I can't imagine removing the cross bars, Yakima bars and/or various bike/boat attachments is going to make any difference at all.
